British actor Ian Gelder, who starred in Game Of Thrones, has died at the age of 74.
Gelder’s passing was confirmed on social media via his partner Ben Daniels. Daniels wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram: “It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder.”
Daniels revealed that Gelder had been “diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December” and that he had stopped work to take care of Gelder but “neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast”.
Daniels added: “He was a wonderful wonderful actor and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and light.”
On Game Of Thrones, Gelder played Kevan Lannister, the younger brother of Lord Tywin Lannister. Gelder appeared in 12 episodes for the hit HBO fantasy series. Gelder was also known for playing Zellin in season 12 of Doctor Who opposite Jodie Whittaker. His television career began in 1972 with a one-episode role on ITV series New Scotland Yard.
Other TV series that Gelder appeared in include Snatch, Fifteen-Love, Casualty, Father Brown, The Bill, Edward The King, I Thought You’d Gone and His Dark Materials.
Besides film and TV, Ian Gelder was also known to be a seasoned stage actor, having appeared in several classic productions throughout his career such as The Crucible, The Taming of the Shrew, The Front Page and most notably, Shakespeare’s Globe: Titus Andronicus.
