Abbott Elementary concludes its third season with a climactic payoff between Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams).
Created by Brunson, the mockumentary sitcom is set in an underfunded public school in Philadelphia, where a documentary crew is recording the lives of teachers who are trying their best against the odds.

Other cast members include Janelle James as principal Ava Coleman, Lisa Ann Walter as second-grade teacher Melissa Schemmenti, Sheryl Lee Ralph as kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, and Chris Perfetti as history teacher Jacob Hill.
The show has won four Emmys since it began in 2021, including Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for Brunson.
What does the end of Abbott Elementary season 3 mean for Janine and Gregory?
In the season three finale, titled Party, Abbott Elementary significantly pushed forward the will-they-or-won’t-they relationship dynamic between Janine and Gregory.
After the party at Janine’s ends, Gregory, who initially leaves, returns to her doorway after everyone else has left. The pair then passionately kiss, before Gregory shuts the door on the camera, and subsequently the blinds on the window, as the episode ends.
While this isn’t the first time they have kissed, following the drunken encounter in season two episode Teacher Conference, this feels like a key turning point. Previously, the pair have hesitated when it comes to romance over concerns it will affect their friendship or work dynamic, but this climax appears to be them choosing to give it a shot regardless.
It’s unclear how this will play out in season four. In typical sitcom fashion, there might be some awkward, prolonged hiding of their relationship from everyone else at Abbott so it doesn’t become a spectacle, or the show might obliterate any uncertainty between them entirely from this point on. Either way, this looks set to play a big role in the next season.
What have the cast said about season 4?
In an interview with Decider, Tyler James Williams teased that the relationship between Gregory and Janine will continue to face hurdles moving forward.
“Oh, there’s definitely going to be challenges,” he said. “Even without revealing stuff going into season four, we just look at the landscape. There’s all types of challenges here. The only person who really knows probably what happened is Jacob. We now have to kind of reveal it to the rest of the school, or maybe not, or maybe keep it a secret.
“That’s the hemming and hawing of, well, do we try to play this close to the vest? Do we try to just be professional at work and something else outside? What is that something else outside? So there’s a number of things. Now there’s more questions than there are answers. It doesn’t really answer anything.”
