'Severance' season two

Hit Apple TV+ series Severance will return for season two next year and a new teaser trailer has been shared to mark the announcement – watch it below.

The new season of the Emmy award winning show, which is directed and executive produced by Ben Stiller, will arrive on January 17 2025.

The new season will be 10 episodes long with episodes dropping weekly following the premiere on January 17. Episodes will arrive every Friday until March 21.

A synopsis about the show and what to expect from season two reads: “In Severance Mark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives.

“This daring experiment in ‘work-life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the centre of an unravelling mystery that will force him to confront the true nature of his work… and of himself. In season two, Mark and his friends learn the dire consequences of trifling with the severance barrier, leading them further down a path of woe.”

Season two sees the return of its ensemble cast of Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken and Patricia Arquette. Sarah Bock will become a new series regular.

A second season was initially confirmed by Apple TV+ back in April 2022, days before the finale of the first season.

In a statement at the time, director Ben Stiller said: “It’s really exciting to see the response from people who are loving the show – and the level of fan engagement. It has been a long road bringing Severance to television. I first read Dan’s pilot over five years ago.

“It has always been a multi-season story, and I’m really happy we get to continue it. I’m grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ who have been behind it the whole way. Praise Kier!”

Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, added: “Thanks to creator Dan Erickson, the brilliant Ben Stiller, and an incomparable cast and crew, Severance has imagined an existence that’s equal parts riveting and enthralling as viewers around the globe can’t get enough of these rich characters. We’re excited to go deeper into this wholly unique world and unpack more layers of Lumon in season two.”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, creator Dan Erickson has previously hinted at what fans can expect from season two.

“We’re going to continue to really focus on the relationships between these characters, and we’re expanding the world,” he told the publication. “The first season was an ensemble piece at work, but it was much more focused on Mark on the outside, obviously. We wanted the audience to experience Mark’s life through his perspective, and he has no idea who Helly and Irving and Dylan are on the outside; his whole context for them is work. So we wanted to tell in that way for season one, but in season two, we’re going to be showing all of these people on the outside.

“Similar to Mark, they each had their own reason for getting this procedure, and they’re all at some stage of a healing process for one thing or another.”

In a five star review of season one, NME said: “So, great cast, great writing, great premise, great everything. The whole package. The home run. If ever you were in doubt about returning to the office, Severance gives it to you straight: don’t bother.”
