Drake and Argentina's Lionel Messi

Argentina’s national football team have taken a dig at Drake after he lost a $300,000 (£234,238) bet against them.

The rapper placed a bet that his home team Canada would beat Lionel Messi’s side in the semi-finals of the Copa América last night (July 9). It would have netted him $2.88million (£2.23million) but Argentina went on to win 2-0 and seal a place in the final.

Following their victory, Argentina posted an image of Messi and co celebrating their victory with the caption “Not Like Us” in reference to Kendrick Lamar‘s diss track of the same name.

The song was originally shared by Lamar earlier this year, as the heavily publicised feud between him and Drake came to a head. It marked his third Drake diss to be shared within 36 hours, and saw him blast the Canadian rapper for his supposed preference for younger women – even to the point where he calls him a “certified paedophile”.

Following the track’s release, it topped the US singles chart and became his fourth Number One song – following on from his feature on Future and Metro Boomin’s ‘Like That’ earlier this year, 2017’s ‘Humble’, and his verse on Taylor Swift’s 2015 track ‘Bad Blood’.

It also became the hip-hop song that has been streamed the most times in a day on Spotify – racking up 6.8million plays and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said it was is eligible for a Grammy nomination.

Drake is yet to comment on Argentina’s diss.

The rapper’s loss comes just months after he lost $500,000 (£393,000) after betting that Tyson Fury would win his recent boxing match against Oleksandr Usyk.

If Fury had taken home the win on the night, Drake would have had a payout of just over $1million (£786,600) from the bet.

The rapper is no stranger to placing large bets on sporting events, and has gathered a reputation in recent years for frequently losing huge amounts of money thanks to the “Drake curse”.

Last summer, the rapper lost $250k (£195,198) after betting on UFC legend Nate Diaz during a boxing match between him and Jake Paul. Just months earlier, he shared that he wagered nearly $1million (£829,500) in “psychotic” bets for the 2023 Super Bowl.

Back in 2022, the ‘Hotline Bling’ artist seemingly lost $1million on a World Cup bet after Argentina beat France. If he had made the right call for the match, he would have won roughly $2.75m (£2.26m).

That same year, it was reported that FC Barcelona fell victim to the notorious “Drake curse” after the rapper bet on them to win their game against Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Messi also featured in Lamar’s 2023 track ‘In The Hillbillies’, which he recorded with his cousin Keem, who raps: “Critics sayin’ that I lost the plot, principles, yeah, I’d rather not, Messi, ’bout to come in hot”.
