The reactions to the season finale of Amazon Prime Video hit show The Boys are in, with fans almost universal in their praise of the final episode.

The eighth and final episode of the fourth run, which has been named by NME as one of the best TV shows of 2024 so far, aired on the streaming platform last night (July 17).

The superhero series, adapted from the comic books written by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and developed for the screen by Eric Kripke, follows the titular team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered enemies who abuse their powers.

Fans of the show have been speaking out after each episode, with the twists and disturbingly graphic scenes in the sixth instalment being labelled “diabolical”, and the seventh being described as “uncomfortable” and “gruesome”.

Fans have been reacting to the finale on Twitter with much praise. One fan described it as “the best episode of the show” while a second described it as “perfect”. Another user said it “ended the season on a high note” while a fourth said it was “really incredible.”

It was confirmed last month by Kripke that the fifth season, which had already been commissioned, will bring the series to an end.

Writing on X, Kripke wrote: “Season 5 will be the Final Season! Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought. Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax.”

Kripke later told Variety that he expects season five to consist of eight episodes, with filming to take place from November 2024 to mid-2025.

No official release date has been confirmed for season five, but based on the turnover period for previous seasons, it is likely that the new episodes will begin to air in summer 2026.

In a four-star review of the new season, NME wrote: “With season five already confirmed, the return of a few familiar faces and a lot of characters confronting their pasts, this season sometimes feels like the set up for an eventual endgame scenario. Fans will note that spin-off show Gen V recently introduced a potentially supe-killing biological weapon. Luckily, all that plot never slows down the pace in what is another urgent edition of TV’s best superhero show.”
