1047 Games has confirmed that beloved first-person-shooter Splitgate will be getting a sequel.

Released in 2019, Splitgate was described by fans as Halo meets Portal, with the game going on to rack up over 22million downloads. It’s maintained a dedicated playerbase over the past five years, and still has a “very positive” rating on Steam.

“Splitgate is a free-to-play, fast-paced multiplayer shooter that features player-controlled portals. This sci-fi shooter takes the FPS genre to a new dimension with its portal mechanics, delivering high-flying, multi-dimensional combat,” read the description, with development ending on the title in 2022.

Now, a sequel is in the works. Confirming the news, 1047 Games CEO Ian Proulx said: “The original Splitgate‘s development was ambitious but scrappy. The game was created from a dorm room, and the massive success and community it earned surpassed our wildest dreams.”

He went on to describe Splitgate 2 as “a revolutionary step forward for competitive shooters”.

“It’s the perfect entry point for players new to the world of Splitgate and a comprehensive upgrade worthy of our existing community,” he continued. “There will be familiar elements, but on the whole, Splitgate 2 should look and feel completely fresh from the original.”

“This time around, Splitgate 2 has been designed from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 to deliver the AAA FPS experience our fans deserve, with the series’ signature action completely overhauled by an all-star team composed of the most talented individuals in the industry,” he added via a blog, with seasoned industry veterans from Riot, Ubisoft and other developers involved. A new faction system and narrative will also be included.

“1047 Games is no longer a handful of college grads hoping the servers don’t crash again. We’re a team of seasoned gaming veterans making a AAA shooter that we hope will surprise, amaze, and excite you”.

Splitgate 2 is due for release 2025 for Xbox, PlayStation and PC and will remain free-to-play.

In other news, EA has confirmed a number of Quality Of Life updates that will be featured in EA Sports FC 25.
