Blossoms have shared a new single called ‘Perfect Me’ – you can listen to it below.

The song is the latest preview of the Stockport band’s fifth studio album ‘Gary’, which is due for release on September 20 (pre-order/pre-save here).

Speaking about the driving, anthemic number on BBC Radio 1 last night (July 23), drummer Joe Donovan explained: “It nearly didn’t make the album, and now full circle – it’s a single.”

Frontman Tom Ogden added: “You do that sometimes – you write a lot of songs for a record, and you kind of put some on the back burner; you come back with [a] fresh perspective. And this one rose to the top like bubbles.”

The singer went on to reveal that ‘Perfect Me’ was “written around a Moog synthesiser arpeggiator”, adding: “Josh [Dewhurst, guitarist] was messing around with it in the room. I think he just pressed a button on the Moog and it made that sound.”

Ogden continued: “I think we wrote it in about half an hour, so it felt like a burst of creativity that was different to how we normally work.”

Sharing the song on social media, Blossoms explained how ‘Perfect Me’ is “a subconscious nod to ABBA, Springsteen and The Killers. While I wanted the lyrics to reflect a pursuit of perfection, which doesn’t exist.

“Can’t wait for you to hear the rest of the album! Tom, Joe, Myles, Chaz & Josh X.”

The track follows on from the previous singles ‘What Can I Say After I’m Sorry?’ and ‘Gary’. Check out the official music video above.

Meanwhile, Blossoms have announced a ‘Covers Edtion’ of their forthcoming album ‘Gary’ featuring classic hits by RadioheadLady Gaga and more. The standard version of the LP will follow on from 2022’s ‘Ribbon Around The Bomb’.

‘Gary’ was produced by Blossoms’ frequent collaborator James Skelly of The Coral, alongside Jungle’s Josh-Lloyd Watson. Additionally, CMAT has co-written two tracks on the record: ‘I Like Your Look’ and ‘Why Do I Give You The Worst Of Me?’.

In a previous statement, Ogden explained: “The heart of this record is about the five of us recording live in a room together for the first time in years.

“We wanted to capture the energy of what it’s like when five friends decide to start a band and make music together.” The frontman described the writing sessions as “the most inspiring few days we’ve had as a band”.

Ogden continued: “The album tracks themselves are based on different stories, mostly from personal experience. On ‘Big Star’ after seeing a well-known music journalist in the Chateau Marmont, I debate going over and introducing myself but then shyness gets the better of me and I don’t.

“‘I Like Your Look’ is a tipping of the hat to Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ and a wink to Joan Baez’s ‘Time Rag’, and lyrically it explores a tongue-in-cheek approach to high fashion. ’Mothers’ is an ode to my and Joe’s friendship and it references the fact that our mothers were friends back in the ‘80s.”
