Kesha has opened up about her “beautiful” upcoming album, and explained how it feels like the start of a new chapter.
The singer made the comments in a new interview, where she looked back at her time in the music industry so far and revealed what she has in the pipeline. It also came as she gears up to release new material as an independent artist.
Kesha announced her departure from RCA and Kemosabe Records last December, later sharing her first independent single ‘Joyride’ on July 4.
She has also been teasing more new music, first with a cardboard sign announcing the news in Los Angeles. She has since performed her first show as a “free motherfucking woman” at WeHo Pride, telling the crowd: “Anybody else feeling free as fuck tonight?”.
Now, she has told fans about what to expect from the upcoming project and explained that it feels like her debut.
“This is the first album I’m making where I’m 100 per cent in control of everything. It feels like it’s my first album,” Kesha told Paper. “It feels divine, it feels like it stands for a lot.
“It’s really beautiful, and I cannot wait to share it. It’s maybe the most beautiful time of my entire life! I am so excited, I got to work with the people I did and capture this moment in time, and put it onto something other people can listen to.”
She also revealed that the making of the album took a huge positive toll on her wellbeing, and is set to be more “fun” than the 2010 debut LP that first put her on the map.
“It’s been deeply life-changing and profound to make this album, but it’s also the most fun I’ve ever had in my life,” she added. “If you thought ‘Animal’ was fun, just fucking wait.”
Four years after the breakthrough release, Kesha parted ways with Kemosabe Records after a lengthy legal battle with its founder Dr. Luke.
The LA-born singer initially sued Dr. Luke in 2014, claiming he sexually assaulted and emotionally abused her. He denied the allegations and countersued Kesha, alleging that she breached her recording contract with him and made her allegations up in an attempt to get out of the deal. Kesha maintained her original claims against Dr. Luke.
The pair settled their defamation lawsuit a month before the case was set to go to trial in June 2023.
Earlier this month, the singer opened up about her venture into becoming an independent artist: “When you’re in a state of fear, you cannot create.”
She told Forbes: “It’s wild that a human being can lose the rights to their recorded voice in perpetuity in the universe.” Kesha also announced her new label Kesha Records, saying she was “really excited to build a safe space for artists because creation and fear cannot co-exist”.
Additionally, Kesha opened up about the newfound sense of honesty and vulnerability that she has harnessed in her songwriting during the recent interview with Paper, namely in her song ‘Praying’.
“That was a big, scary moment in my life personally and publicly. But I hold myself to the standard of being an artist that cannot be dishonest in my music. The song will be terrible, and you’re wasting not only your time, but the time of the people you’re working with.
“To have that be the first time I got nominated for Grammys… that did give me the confidence to really lean into what’s actually going on in my life. I make art. I’m an artist. I’m not in the business of commerce!”
