Rob Lowe

Rob Lowe has said that he is currently working on the “early stages” of a sequel to his classic ‘80s coming of age film St. Elmo’s Fire.

The original film was released in 1985 and is considered one of the key films in the Brat Pack movement.

It served as the breakthrough for director Joel Schumacher, and starred Lowe alongside fellow Brat Pack stars Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Andie MacDowell and Andrew McCarthy.

And now, Lowe has told Entertainment Tonight that after the success of the recent documentary Brats, which told the story of that generation of actors and films, he is more committed than before to a second St. Elmo’s Fire instalment.

“We’ve met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Lowe said, confirming that Brats had “only added to the excitement around it.”

“But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages,” he added. “So we will see.”

The story centred on a clique of graduates of Washington D.C.’s Georgetown University as they attempt to adjust to life after studying and their burgeoning adulthood.

The film was met with largely negative reviews at the time of its release, with Lowe even picking up a Razzie for his performance, but it has endured and is now considered a cult classic.

In other Lowe news, he revealed in January that he accidentally sent a congratulatory text message to the wrong actor following the Golden Globe awards.

He admitted that he mistakenly texted Bradley Cooper to praise him on his victory, when in fact the winner had been Robert Downey Jr. The two actors had been in competition for Maestro and Oppenheimer respectively.

“Downey does this amazing acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, and I’m so excited for him so I text him, ‘So glad you won. That is the most beautiful acceptance speech I’ve heard in a long time. Boy do you deserve it.’,” Lowe said.

“I hit it and I realise, ‘Oh shit. I just sent that to Bradley Cooper.’”
