Victoria Beckham has doubled down on her assertion that she had a “working class” upbringing, after going viral in a meme last year.
In the Netflix documentary series Beckham, she described her background as “very working class”, which prompted her husband David Beckham to interrupt the interview and tell her to “be honest”.
“What car did your dad drive you to school in?” David asked Victoria. “One answer.”
After some back and forth, Victoria eventually replied: “Ok. In the ’80s, my dad had a Rolls-Royce.”
In a new interview with Vogue Australia, the former Spice Girl addressed the video. “You know, my dad had a Rolls-Royce and he also had a white van,” she said. “I came from a working-class background and so my dad in the 80s, he was an entrepreneur, he started his business with my mum at the kitchen table and he did very well, so he bought himself a Rolls-Royce.”
“We went to a regular school and we didn’t live in a big house and the minute he made money he went and bought himself a Rolls-Royce.
“One day we’d go to school in the Rolls-Royce and one day we’d go in the van because he’d still work, he was an electrical wholesaler and he was very much a worker,” she added.
After the clip was spread widely on social media, Victoria embraced the meme and produced a range of t-shirts with the slogan, “My dad had a Rolls-Royce”.
“Now, who doesn’t love a slogan t-shirt? I do,” she said in a TikTok clip. “And I have to say, my question for you all, ‘What did your dad drive you to school in?’ My dad drove me in, yes, a Rolls-Royce.”
The couple also recreated the clip for an Uber Eats advert that was shown during the Super Bowl.
David Beckham later revealed that the director of the show Fisher Stevens was “very angry” about the moment at the time, although he accepted that it “turned out to be brilliant”.
In April, the former England captain shared a video of all five Spice Girls reuniting for Victoria’s 50th birthday celebrations, singing and dancing along to their 1998 single ‘Stop’.
Speculation has been swirling in recent months about a possible Spice Girls reunion, with Mel B fuelling the rumours in March by hinting that the group would “definitely [be] doing something” for their 30th anniversary.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting news of a return of the ‘Wannabe’ chart-toppers, following previous reunions in 2007, 2012 and 2018. They first split in 2000.
