Mimi Webb caught up with NME backstage at Lollapalooza to tell us about her new song ‘Erase You’, working with Ryan Tedder and the process of creating her second album.

Webb released ‘Erase You’ this past Friday (August 2), two days ahead of her performance on the Bud Light stage at the annual Chicagoan music bash in the city’s Grant Park.
The song is a bright and pulsing dance floor anthem reminiscent of Robyn‘s classic hit ‘Dancing On My Own’. It sees Webb sing: “I’ll forget your name (I’m gonna erase you) / I’ma kill him with that red dress, dancing like a hot mess / Make him go insane (I’m gonna erase you).”
“The inspiration behind ‘Erase You’ was feeling that final goodbye, that final wave to the person that you’re done with,” Webb told NME. “This song was all about moving forward and erasing both the bad and the good, but in a healthy way. It’s just that kind of ‘F you’ vibe, I’m gonna actually go and live up to my full potential now.”
To create the track, the pop singer teamed up with previous collaborator One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder (Beyoncé, Tate McRae). The pair are currently at work on her second album which will serve as the follow-up to her 2022 debut LP ‘Amelia’.
“I’ve been a massive fan of One Republic since I can remember,” said Webb. “Honestly, I just love everything. When I’m in the studio with Ryan and he’s singing, I’ll try to do the little things he does, and we’ll be laughing.”
She continued: “He’s just such an amazing vocalist, and that was a really big reason why I wanted to get in the studio with him. Once we started writing some really sick songs, it all just started to flow so nicely.”
When asked if there was any advice Tedder has given her while working on a song, Webb shared: “He always says if it takes too long for the song to come, it’s just not the right one. He’s very about the song just coming like that if it naturally feels like it’s the right song.”
Webb also opened up about the inspiration and themes behind her upcoming album, revealing that she loves “being able to access and dive into different things that have gone on in my life”.
“I love being able to spin them into different stories in different ways,” she said. “It’s a level up from my last album. I’m now as a woman, finding myself and my sound and my voice, and being able to really experiment with that in the album has definitely been the inspiration.”
Webb previously described her debut album ‘Amelia’ as “The best version of me” and shared that her next full-length project would focus more on “mixed emotions and the highs and lows.”
“It is also about change in general,” she explained. “Nothing ever stays the same. It really doesn’t. And I think I’ve really learned that lesson in life. It was so nice to be able to look at my last album and then look at this album, and be able to say to myself ‘Change is good, and change is what it’s about’. I feel like this definitely represents that.”
Last year, the singer was nominated for BRIT Award in the category of Best New Talent. When asked by NME if she felt like there was any pressure with creating a new album that will one up her previous release, Webb said: “I feel like there’s always pressure when you love something so much and you’re passionate about something, but no, honestly. I just want to have a great time and enjoy my career. Gotta keep pushing through.”
