Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas is widely considered to be the best of the 3D-era games, but Bethesda rarely gives it its flowers. The lead developer behind it, Josh Sawyer, says he’s open to making another one, but he has some conditions.

In a Q&A on his own YouTube channel (with answers transcribed by PC Gamer), Sawyer said, “sure” when asked if he’d return to the Fallout world. New Vegas was made by Obsidian, where Sawyer was the lead designer for the game.

Now that Bethesda and Obsidian are both owned by Microsoft, fans are hoping Obsidian can have another go with the IP.

“I love the Fallout IP,” Sawyer explained. “I think there’s still a ton of stories that can be told in there and questions that can be asked about… society.” However, he is concerned about what restrictions may be placed on him if he did work on the franchise again.

“With any project I think it has to do with, ‘What are we doing, what are the boundaries that we’re working within, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?’,” Sawyer continued.

“I think that with any IP, especially one I’ve worked with before, the question is, what do I want to do this time that I wasn’t able to do last time? And if those constraints are just really constraining then it’s not very appealing, because who wants to work on something where the one thing they want to explore is not possible to explore?”

If Sawyer is given the freedom to make a new Fallout game, it seems unlikely that he’d opt for a direct sequel to New Vegas, so it would be interesting to see what part of the post-apocalyptic US he would set his sights on.

In other news, it is now believed that the Nintendo Switch 2 likely won’t hit shelves until the next fiscal year, so April 2025 or later.
