Halle Berry has said that Pierce Brosnan “restored my faith in men” while on the set of their 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day.
The film was Brosnan’s fourth and final 007 film and Berry co-starred as Giacinta “Jinx” Johnson, a national security agent.
Speaking to Wired, Berry has shared her resoundingly positive memories of filming with Brosnan. “He will always be my Bond, always,” she said. “I’m a Pierce Brosnan fan. He restored my faith in men on that movie. There couldn’t be a human who is more of a gentleman than Pierce Brosnan.”
“Bond wasn’t on my wish list, no, not to be in one, but I loved the movies, always,” Berry continued. “Having been in one, I feel like I’m a part of cinematic history. Those movies are iconic. They will forever be a part of our history, and I’m really honored to have been a part of one, especially with Pierce.”
Berry’s Jinx character was set to get her own spinoff movie, before MGM Studios withdrew their support in 2020, which the actress described as “very disappointing” at the time. “Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value,” she said. “That’s where we were then.”
Berry has been in reflective mood about her career in the last few weeks, after recently speaking about the legacy of 2004’s Catwoman.
“I loved it. It got panned – the critics said it sucked balls… and balls aren’t that bad,” she quipped. “What I’m happy about is that the children have found it now on the internet, and they love it. So, it’s so vindicating.”
Referencing Charli XCX, she continued: “Because now they’re saying it’s cool and what the heck was everybody’s problem with it, so like, I’m like, ‘I’m so brat now’.”
When asked if she would ever reprise the role of Catwoman, Halle Berry said: “Maybe, if I could direct it.”
She was also recently asked why her portrayal of Storm in the X-Men franchise did not make a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. She revealed: “Blake [Lively] asked me one time, I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show, and she said, ‘Would you ever be in my husband [Ryan Reynolds’] movie as Storm?’ I said, ‘Yeah, if he asked me,’ but he never asked me.”
Berry has also recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of her role in The Flintstones. “Being a Black woman in Bedrock seemed like a little thing but, you know, The Flintstones was the fabric of our culture,” she said.
“I knew that this was a big step forward for Black people, Black women especially. While it was silly, and it was over the top and campy, I knew then how important this little part in this big movie actually would be.”
Berry is currently starring in the spy comedy The Union opposite Mark Wahlberg, which is streaming on Netflix now.
The new James Bond, meanwhile, has not been confirmed, although it was reported in March that EON Production had offered Aaron Taylor-Johnson the job after he impressed producer Barbara Broccoli in a screen test.
