Saint Vitus Bar, Brooklyn’s legendary heavy metal venue, has closed for good.
The bar, which has hosted titans like Megadeth, Anthrax, Deafheaven, Killing Joke, Carcass and Against Me in its time, has officially shut its location in Greenpoint, New York City.
On Instagram, the bar announced its closure, writing in its caption: “1120 Manhattan Ave. 2011-2024. Saint Vitus Bar to be continued…
“Thank you to everyone who was a part of it,” it continued, signing off from its founders “Love and Hails, Arty [Shepherd], George [Souleidis], David [Castillo].”
Variety reports that its booker Castillo has told the publication the venue’s management “currently has no comment on its future plans”.
Memorably, the venue was shut mid-set during a Mindforce gig, due to the bar allegedly not having the proper permits to run as a live music venue.
A spokesperson for the NY Department of Buildings Andrew Rudansky previously said Saint Vitus was operating as an “illegal eating and drinking establishment”, claiming the venue was only meant to be used “for a commercial store and for the storage of machinery.”
The venue, which branded itself as a “real fucking rock bar” when it first opened in 2011, also hosted a rare Nirvana reunion in 2014, which took place shortly after the band were inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame.
Lorde, St Vincent, Joan Jett and Sonic Youth‘s Kim Gordon fronted the band with the remaining members of Nirvana (bassist Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear), with Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis and John McAuley joining as well.
St Vincent would later call the gig the “fucking best night of my life“.
