Mariah Carey has revealed that her mother and sister have died on the same day in a “tragic turn of events”.

The singer confirmed the deaths in a statement to Billboard on the night of Monday August 26. The deaths took place over the weekend, and she did not elaborate on the events that led to their deaths.

Carey said in her statement: “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day. I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Mariah had been vocal in the past about her tumultuous relationship with her mother, but the two had maintained their relationship throughout the years. Mariah wrote of their relationship in her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions.”

“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,” continued Mariah in the book. “A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s.”

The 2020 memoir also included a dedication to her mother: “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

Mariah Carey’s relationship with her late sister Alison was also revealed to be complex in nature, revealing in the memoir that as of 2020, it was deemed to be “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with her or their brother Morgan.

The deaths of Patricia and Alison Carey comes less than a month after fans expressed their concerns for Mariah after she was seen “crying” during an “uncomfortable” live performance.

While performing as part of her residency, called The Celebration of Mimi, at Las Vegas’ Dolby Live – the popstar appeared to get emotional on stage while singing her 1991 hit ‘Make It Happen’. Fans have since suggested that Mariah take a break to take care of her mental well-being.
