'Black Myth: Wukong'.

Black Myth: Wukong only launched last week, but fans are already asking questions about the future of the game.

Black Myth: Wukong has had an absolutely massive launch. Not only has the action role-playing game become one of the most popular games to ever release on Steam, it’s helped the platform have its busiest weekend ever with over 37million users concurrently using Steam at one point.

It’s also been reported that bosses in China have given workers time off to play Black Myth, while locations that inspired the game have become tourist hotspots.

Needless to say, fans are already excited about what this success will mean for developers Game Science and Black Myth as a franchise. Could a sequel or an expansion be on the cards? Here’s what we know.

Will Black Myth: Wukong be getting DLC?

Probably yes

Black Myth: Wukong is an absolutely massive game. While not an open-world game, the title does give players the freedom to break away from the linear narrative, which makes the adventure game feel truly epic.

The main story has been taking players around 30 hours to complete, while others have spent closer to 90 hours ticking off all the side-quests and hidden achievements that weave their way through the game. Understandably, those same players are already asking for more.

And they’re in luck. Developers Game Science have hinted they’re working on an expansion for Black Myth: Wukong while a major leaker has reported that the plan is for a “substantial” DLC.

“Black Myth: Wukong employs a classic one-time purchase model with a one-time payment,” reads the official FAQs. “In the future, we may release DLCs and NON-PAY-TO-WIN in-game purchases. Additionally, we encourage everyone to take a screenshot of this statement as our guarantee.”

What could a Black Myth: Wukong expansion include?

Monkey business

As well as additional weapons, armour and items, a DLC could expand the main story of Black Myth: Wukong. The game currently features six chapters for players to explore, but the original plan was 12 chapters. It’s not known if these were reworked to fit in the original storyline, or if Game Science has several unused plot points ready to roll out.

Fans have been complaining that several key chapters from the Journey To The West story have been left out, so a potential expansion could feature those.

What about a Black Myth sequel?

A potential trilogy

While Game Science has yet to confirm plans for a sequel, the massive success of Wukong makes a follow-up seem incredibly likely.

It’s also been reported that the developers have recently copyrighted two additional names, with Black Myth: Jiang Ziya and Black Myth: Zhong Kui something to do with Game Science’s future plans.

Wukong is based on the classic Chinese novel Journey To The West but it seems Game Science could be inspired by ancient Chinese history for future titles. Jiang Ziya was a Chinese military general who helped kings Wen and Wu of Zhou overthrow the Shang in ancient China in 11th century BC while Zhong Kui is a mythological being with the power to vanquish ghosts and command demons. Both sound like the makings of incredible games.

When could the Black Myth: Wukong expansion be released?

Bugs need to be squashed first

While developers are probably hoping to release further Black Myth: Wukong content as early as possible, there are several bugs in the base game that still need fixing, with players reporting issues with graphics, memory and performance.

The Xbox version of the game has also been indefinitely delayed due a major “memory leak” issue, with the team currently working on a fix.

Players are expecting Black Myth: Wukong to follow a similar path as Elden Ring, which released a massive expansion almost two years after the base game launched.
