The Wanted’s Max George has shared a health update, following being rushed to A&E last week for heart issues.
On Friday (December 13), the singer revealed that he had been hospitalised after some tests revealed “issues” with his heart. At the time, he shared a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed while giving a thumbs up and explained that he had been admitted after “feeling really unwell” and having some tests done.
Now, he has updated fans again about his health condition, saying that he may need to undergo open heart surgery and is potentially going to spend Christmas in the hospital.
Speaking in a new post on Instagram Stories, the 36-year-old singer disclosed that he may need a pacemaker to fix an issue with the “lower part of his heart”.
“I’ve got an issue with the bottom part of my heart, it’s called a block… until I have further tests, we don’t know what’s caused it,” he explained (via The Star), ruling out alcohol as a potential cause. “We’ve cancelled out a few things, like alcohol for example, I’ve not had a drink in four-and-a-half years. So it’s not that. It’s a bit of a mystery really, the hard bit is the waiting.”
He later went on to say that he has been finding the ordeal “tough”, and that his heart rate is “really really low which [the hospital is] monitoring 24/7.” He added: “It’s just one of them things, unfortunately. Whatever I get I just got to get on with it. I’m hoping the pacemaker is good, we can do pretty good with that.”
The update comes after his mum told fans that he was “being very well taken care of”, and also after the singer shared his surprise at discovering he has heart issues.
“Although this is a huge shock and no doubt a setback, it’s something I’ll take on with all I’ve got! I count myself very lucky that this was caught when it was,” he said last week. “Apologies if I bore you with updates in the coming weeks… I’ve probably got a month in a bed and there’s not THAT much to do!”
Upon the announcement being made, fellow Wanted bandmate Siva Kaneswaran took to the comments to share his support. “Here for you brother. Rest up and get well soon,” he wrote. Other words of encouragement came from TV host and former JLS singer Marvin Humes: “Sorry to hear you’re not well geezer..you’re strong and will fight through..big love mate.”
The Wanted rose to fame in early 2010 and are widely known for their chart-topping single ‘Glad You Came’. They announced a hiatus in 2014 and a comeback in 2022. The latter saw them return as a duo, comprised of George and Kaneswaran.
In March of that year, bandmate Tom Parker passed away at the age of 33 after battling brain cancer.
