A cryptic new project connected to the late DJ and producer SOPHIE has been teased for next week by the artistās label Transgressive Records.
The label released a video on Friday (June 21) that included a list of synchronised timings for cities around the world ā London, Berlin, Los Angeles, New York and Sydney ā and the date of June 24.
The exact moment the video is prompting will come at 6:30pm BST on Monday, June 24. No further information about what to expect has been made available.
New social media accounts have also been set up under @MSMSMSM_FOREVER, referencing SOPHIEās former online handle.
In January 2021,Ā the pioneering DJ, producer and hyperpop trailblazer died at the age of 34Ā in a fall from a hotel rooftop in Athens.
SOPHIEās influence continues to be felt throughout music, with Charli XCXās new album āBratā including the song āSo Iā, written in memory of her friend and close collaborator.
Charli debuted the song live in March at Billboardās Women In Music event, which you can watch here.
Elaborating on the song, Charli toldĀ NME: āItās probably not as simply put as [a tribute] but there is a song on the record which talks about my relationship with SOPHIE. Essentially, dealing with grief is what the song is about. Itās very real. All the lyrics are things that I would text my friends ā the kind of dialogue and the voice of this record is very conversational and very diar-etic for sure.ā
Similarly, St. Vincent has included a song on her new album inspired by SOPHIE. Released in April, āAll Born ScreamingāĀ features the track āSweetest Fruitā, which Annie Clark was moved to write after reading an article concerning the producerās tragic death.
āThe internet twists things, and I donāt want it to be seen like Iām trying to capitalise on somebodyās death,ā she said. āI was an admirer from afar, we never met, but I read about the way that she fell because she was trying to get a better look at the moon, which was just the most beautiful, poetic thing Iāve ever heard.ā
She went on to explain that the song in question is about āpeople trying for transcendence, and at least they were taking a big swing or trying for something beautifulā.
