SOPHIE

A cryptic new project connected to the late DJ and producer SOPHIE has been teased for next week by the artistā€™s label Transgressive Records.

The label released a video on Friday (June 21) that included a list of synchronised timings for cities around the world ā€“ London, Berlin, Los Angeles, New York and Sydney ā€“ and the date of June 24.

The exact moment the video is prompting will come at 6:30pm BST on Monday, June 24. No further information about what to expect has been made available.

New social media accounts have also been set up under @MSMSMSM_FOREVER, referencing SOPHIEā€™s former online handle.

In January 2021,Ā the pioneering DJ, producer and hyperpop trailblazer died at the age of 34Ā in a fall from a hotel rooftop in Athens.

SOPHIEā€™s influence continues to be felt throughout music, with Charli XCXā€™s new album ā€˜Bratā€™ including the song ā€˜So Iā€™, written in memory of her friend and close collaborator.

Charli debuted the song live in March at Billboardā€™s Women In Music event, which you can watch here.

Elaborating on the song, Charli toldĀ NME: ā€œItā€™s probably not as simply put as [a tribute] but there is a song on the record which talks about my relationship with SOPHIE. Essentially, dealing with grief is what the song is about. Itā€™s very real. All the lyrics are things that I would text my friends ā€“ the kind of dialogue and the voice of this record is very conversational and very diar-etic for sure.ā€

Similarly, St. Vincent has included a song on her new album inspired by SOPHIE. Released in April, ā€˜All Born Screamingā€™Ā features the track ā€˜Sweetest Fruitā€™, which Annie Clark was moved to write after reading an article concerning the producerā€™s tragic death.

ā€œThe internet twists things, and I donā€™t want it to be seen like Iā€™m trying to capitalise on somebodyā€™s death,ā€ she said. ā€œI was an admirer from afar, we never met, but I read about the way that she fell because she was trying to get a better look at the moon, which was just the most beautiful, poetic thing Iā€™ve ever heard.ā€

She went on to explain that the song in question is about ā€œpeople trying for transcendence, and at least they were taking a big swing or trying for something beautifulā€.
