Adult Swim has dropped the first official trailer for Rick And Morty: The Anime – you can watch it above.
Originally announced in May last year, the 10-episode series is directed by Takashi Sano (Tower Of God), who previously helmed two anime shorts based on the show, ‘Rick and Morty vs. Genocider’ and ‘Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil)’.
In a press release, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen said that Sano is a “huge” fan of the original series, making him “the perfect person to give us all this alternate version of this amazing show.”
The plot description for the anime series reads: “Rick relaxes in a pseudo-world between multiverses, Summer helps Space Beth fight the evil Galactic Federation, and Morty falls in love with a mysterious girl who happens to be an atemporal being.”
The anime series will be the only piece of Rick And Morty content released this year, with the upcoming eight season not scheduled to arrive until 2025. And that seems to be a point of contention for many fans of the animation, who appear to be far from enthusiastic about the duo’s anime adventure.
“Why couldn’t we just have a new season, literally nobody asked for this,” posted one person in response to the trailer, while another wrote: “This looks awful, it it meant to be a joke?”

Why didn’t they bring the OG cast to dub their characters in the anime? I never understand why America doesn’t use union celebrity actors to dub anime or foreign products and mostly rely on dubbing experts. I mean JAPAN uses their regular union seiyuus to dub foreign shows!!!

Another X user criticised the anime for not using the show’s original voice cast, with it instead opting for mixture of Japanese and English speaking actors.
“Why didn’t they bring the OG cast to dub their characters in the anime?” said one individual. “I never understand why America doesn’t use union celebrity actors to dub anime or foreign products and mostly rely on dubbing experts. I mean JAPAN uses their regular union seiyuus to dub foreign shows!!!”
Rick and Morty: The Anime will premiere on August 15 at midnight on Adult Swim in the US. The subtitled Japanese version will then drop on August 17 at midnight as part of Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block.
Back in July last year, Adult Swim showed the opening credit sequence of the anime to attendees at San Diego Comic-Con.
Speaking at the end of the footage, Sano described his ambitions for the series. “What I’ve tried to accomplish in these 10 episodes is to take all my favourite parts of watching Rick and Morty, compress them down to extract their essence, and then add a unique Japanese twist,” he said.
“I’d like you to enjoy Rick And Morty’s adventures as they’re whisked through time and space, tangled up in all sorts of chaos. And after all 10 episodes, I think you’ll find yourself in a peculiar state of mind. And that state, I believe, best reflects the feelings I get watching Rick And Morty.”
