Ángel Salazar, who played Chi Chi in Scarface alongside Al Pacino, has died.
The 68-year-old died on Sunday (August 11) at a friend’s home in Brooklyn, New York. A cause of death has not yet been disclosed, reports Variety.
The Cuban-American actor was born in 1956 and started his career in New York, where he worked in comedy clubs after he fled Cuba at a young age.
He landed his first role in Brian DePalma’s Scarface in 1983. He then went on to play Rico, alongside Tom Hanks in Punchline in 1988 and then as Walberto in Carlito’s Way alongside Pacino once again in 1993. Other notable credits included Boulevard Nights, Sylvester, and Maniac Cop 2.
Salazar also made a number of television appearances as himself including on Showtime At The Apollo in 1992.
He was most famously known for his role in Scarface though in which he saves Tony Montana (Pacino) in the famous chainsaw scene, where he is almost killed by rival gang leader Hector (Al Israel).
His character meets a bloody end when he is killed by a hit squad hired by drug kingpin Alejandro Sosa near the end of the film, his back riddled with bullets.
More recently he appeared in The Latin Legends Of Comedy, a 2006 documentary centered on Salazar and fellow comedians J.J. Ramirez and Joe Vega. He also featured on reality competition show Last Comic Standing.
He was due to make a return as Chi Chi in the movie The Brooklyn Premiere this year alongside Steven Bauer who also appeared in Scarface.
Meanwhile, it was recently confirmed that Pacino is set to play a Mafia boss once again in a new kidnapping thriller.
