Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel has revealed that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The actress, 43, shared the news on a recent episode of the podcast Pod Meets World, which she hosts with co-stars Rider Strong and Will Friedle.

“I would like to share something with our listeners, something that Rider and Will were two of the first people I told the news to,” Fishel said. “I was recently diagnosed with DCIS, which stands for ductal carcinoma in situ, which is a form of breast cancer.”

Fishel went on to reassure listeners that she is confident that the diagnosis has been made in good time. “It is very, very, very early. It’s technically stage zero,” she added. “To be specific, just because I like too much information all the time, I was diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with micro-invasion.”

“I’m going to be fine. I’m having surgery to remove it. I’m going to be on some follow-up treatment. I’ve had to make a lot of decisions over the last couple of days.”

She clarified that she was sharing the information to encourage other women to be attentive about their own health.

“The only reason I caught this cancer when it is still stage zero is because the day I got my text message that my yearly mammogram had come up, I made the appointment,” she said. “They found it so, so, so early that I’m going to be fine. I hope it will encourage anyone to get in there.”

The teen comedy Boy Meets World ran for seven seasons on ABC between 1993 and 2000, with the whole series now available to stream on Disney+. Fishel played Topanga Lawrence, a classmate of protagonist Cory Matthews (Ben Savage), with whom he develops a relationship and later marries.

In 2022, NME included the show in its list of the 50 greatest teen shows of all time, alongside the likes of Skins, Stranger Things and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

“This colourful ’90s sitcom was a bit like Saved by the Bell with better acting,” NME wrote. “A popular show on US network ABC for seven years, it followed Corey (Ben Savage), love interest Topanga (Danielle Fishel) and best friend Shawn (Rider Strong) as they navigated the ups and downs of high school life. It was rebooted in 2014 as Girl Meets World.”
