Cardi B has responded to the “obvious anticipation” around her upcoming new album, telling fans that it will be “coming this year”.

Cards has been working on her second album for six years, and in May offered an update saying she was delaying the release of the record in a now-deleted tweet.

“Anyway, NO album this year,” she wrote. “I don’t care. I’m relaxing this year. [I’m] dropping these features I already committed to and travelling and enjoying my summer.”

This was later revealed to be untrue when a representative for the rapper said that an album was still on the cards for this year. It was also made known that the LP had no title and needed a few more songs added to it.

The currently untitled project will be the follow-up to Cardi’s 2018 record-breaking debut ‘Invasion Of Privacy’. The release won Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys, making Cardi the first-ever solo female act to win the award.

She spoke about the album’s delay in a cover story with Rolling Stone too, saying: “I take my music so fucking seriously that that’s why I don’t put it out. “If it’s not perfect to my ear, if every fucking word doesn’t sound like it’s pronounced right, if the beat is overpowering the words or the words is overpowering the beat, I don’t want to put it out.”

Now, on X/Twitter, Cardi has given an update on when fans can expect to hear the new project. She wrote: “I wanna say this to Bardi gang or anybody who’s just a fan of my music or even my craziness… I have my good days and my bad days but you know what, whether it’s good or bad I couldn’t be happier with the obvious anticipation for my album..Sometimes I get a little aggressive because yall know I don’t like to be told what to do but I promise you it’s coming THIS YEAR. Thank you for the love and anticipation and always holding me down. I love yall.”

In the years since releasing her debut album, Cardi has kept busy releasing a selection of singles, most notably ‘Please Me’ with Bruno Marsin 2019, ‘Up’ in 2021 and ‘WAP’ in 2020 with Megan Thee Stallion. She’s also released a new collaboration today (July 19) with Rob49 called ‘On Dat Money’ that you can listen to here:

Earlier this month, Cardi teased a new song that features a Janet Jackson sample.

On July 1, the ‘WAP’ rapper posted a video snippet of a new song to her Instagram Stories. Sampling Jackson’s ‘Funny How Time Flies (When You’re Having Fun)’, the snippet sees Cardi trade in her usual energetic rap verses for subdued singing: “I hope that you on your way / Crazy ’bout you / Waiting on you, can’t wait to sit on that face / Focused on you.

She also wrote: ‘Y’all like this vibe for ‘CB2’?” ‘CB2’ is the working title for Cardi B’s long-awaited sophomore album.

Fans also think Cardi has been giving some clues about the themes of the album recently too.

Cardi B’s 2018 debut album ‘Invasion Of Privacy’ scored a four-star review from NME, with Nick Levine writing: “This is a remarkably confident and compelling debut from a superstar who’s put in the graft. “My little 15 minutes lasting long as hell, huh?” she boasts nonchalantly on final track ‘I Do’. On this evidence, it’s going to last a lot longer yet.”
