BLUE ÖYSTER CULT will return with a mammoth new studio album, "The Symbol Remains", on October 9. Coming nearly two decades after the release of their last LP, "Curse Of The Hidden Mirror", it showcases a band who hasn't been slowed by the time passed, but simply unphased by it. "The Symbol Remains" is one of the band's most spirited, diverse, and inspired releases to date. Fans can listen to two new songs from the album, "That Was Me" and "Box In My Head", below. "The Symbol Remains" will be available on CD, 2xLP, limited-edition color 2xlp, and digital formats. The limited-edition color LPs (green, crystal, blue) are extremely limited pressing (200 of each, worldwide) and only available from the Frontiers Music Srl's U.S. and European webstores. As the old saying goes, "good things come to those who wait" and the 14 songs showcased on "The Symbol Remains" embody that. The BLUE ÖYSTER CULT faithful will be delighted given that the band has delivered an extremely inspired album. Ultimately, this sounds like a band looking back at their storied catalog and giving the fans a bit of everything they've ever loved about BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, while simultaneously continuing to evolve. BLUE ÖYSTER CULT started sessions for the new album in earnest in 2019, bringing songs to the table that had previously been in the works as well as working on new ones. The goal was to craft an album that gives an appropriate portrait of where the band is in the here and now. "With the song demos emerging for this record, we realized there was as much if not more variety in style and content on this record as any in our history," says Eric Bloom. "We embraced this and the thing tying all the disparate elements together is the band's sound and performance." "The goal was for the new music to stand up to the quality and vitality of our legacy recordings, and I believe we have successfully done that," adds Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser. "Other than that, the sound of our voices and style of our writing and playing can't help but sound familiar to fans of our work." "The album title, 'The Symbol Remains', comes from a quote of an old Sandy Pearlman lyric, which basically we are using to show that the band is back and still rocking after all these years. To me, it means we're still here and doing what we do..." explains Bloom. As fans well know, Bloom and Roeser are the two steadfast members remaining from the "classic" lineup of the band, but Jules Radino, Danny Miranda and Richie Castellano are all longtime members. Their constant touring has truly caused them to gel as a unit and you can hear it in the performances on "The Symbol Remains". Jules, Danny and Richie here have left their mark on the 50-plus years of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT history. "We wanted to record the current band's lineup for some time and the result of Jules, Danny, Richie, Eric and myself giving our all on 'The Symbol Remains' speaks for itself," says Dharma. While the current world situation caused some distress, the band is still very happy with the final result. "The COVID-19 lockdown slowed the completion of the record," adds Dharma. "We were prevented from traveling and collaborating in person. But luckily we had already done the basic tracks. We resorted to video conferencing and producing each other over the internet. Fortunately, the technology exists at this moment in time to do that. The live performance cancellations gave us a little more time to carefully consider the finishing touches. We also sent the album out to be mixed by Tom Lord-Alge and we worked together over the internet on that as well." "The Symbol Remains" track listing: 01. That Was Me 02. Box In My Head 03. Tainted Blood 04. Nightmare Epiphany 05. Edge Of The World 06. The Machine 07. Train True (Lennie's Song) 08. The Return Of St. Cecilia 09. Stand And Fight 10. Florida Man 11. The Alchemist 12. Secret Road 13. There's A Crime 14. Fight BÖC is often cited as a major influence by other acts such as METALLICA, and BÖC was listed in VH1's countdown of the greatest hard rock bands of all time. Upon the release of BÖC's self-titled debut album in 1972, the band was praised for its catchy-yet-heavy music and lyrics that could be provocative, terrifying, funny or ambiguous, often all in the same song. BÖC's canon contains three stone‐cold classic songs that will waft through the cosmos long after the sun has burned out: the truly haunting "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" from 1976's "Agents Of Fortune", the pummeling "Godzilla" from 1977's "Spectres" and the hypnotically melodic "Burnin' for You" from 1981's "Fire Of Unknown Origin". Other notable BÖC songs include "Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll", "Then Came The Last Days Of May", "I Love The Night", "In Thee", "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars", "Dominance And Submission", "Astronomy", "Black Blade" and "Shooting Shark".

Shapeshifting progressive metal pioneer Ihsahn has once again pushed the boundaries of unconstrained creation — this time with the release of his striking single/video tribute to Norwegian pop pioneers A-HA. He has shared the video for his cover of the band's "Manhattan Skyline", which appears on his new EP, "Pharos", out September 11 via Candlelight Records. The version features the phenomenal vocal talents of Einar Solberg of LEPROUS. "Manhattan Skyline" was originally released by A-HA in 1986 and reached No. 13 in the U.K. singles chart. With a refresh for 2020, Ihsahn has produced a delicate but true-to-the-original tribute, combining a soft, ballad-like verse that explodes into a bombastic rock chorus featuring all the melodramatic grandeur of the original. Directed and filmed by Troll Toftenes, the video sees Ihsahn at his most passionate. With the breathtaking landscape of Norway as the backdrop, Ihsahn plays his Aristides T/0 Lilac Pearl Satin guitar atop Gaustatoppen, the highest mountain in Norway, at sunset while Solberg's earnest and emotional vocals soar to otherworldly levels of brilliance. Ihsahn admits that his love of A-HA is not new, saying, "There are some hints of A-HA even on the second EMPEROR album." This revelation may frustrate followers of the orthodoxy present within extreme music. But for Ihsahn, he has never worried about being confined to certain expectations. "I never wanted to be as one-dimensional [with] this black metal image," the artist explains. "When I turned 40, I stopped caring. But if you start out playing black metal when you're 16, it's hardly because you want to be everybody's favorite." "Pharos" is another triumph for Ihsahn, a polymathic composer who has already leant his iconoclastic spirit to rule-breaking bands and projects. He has yet again woven intricate, sonic landscapes that cement his status as a true musical alchemist. Recorded at his home studio, with additional drums by Tobias Solbakk at Jukes Joint Studio, "Pharos" is musically and conceptually a reverse image of "Telemark" — the first of the two linked EPs, released back in February of this year. The light to "Telemark"'s dark, "Pharos" features three original compositions and another cover, which is the haunting "Roads", which was originally done by British trip-hop collective PORTISHEAD. "'Telemark' was everything that was close to my heart: basic guitar riffing, screaming vocals," Ihsahn said. "I thought, 'I need to do a sequel where I do the exact opposite' — things that I don't know how to do, explore sonic territory that I haven't explored." "Pharos" EP track listing: 01. Losing Altitude 02. Spectre At The Feast 03. Pharos 04. Roads (PORTISHEAD cover) 05. Manhattan Skyline (A-HA cover, featuring Einar Solberg of LEPROUS)

Norway's avantgarde metal heroes ENSLAVED have released the third single, "Urjotun" from their upcoming album, "Utgard", due on October 2 via Nuclear Blast. The track, one of their most experimental yet, is accompanied by a psychedelic video detailing dark visions and a journey to the outer reaches of the subconscious. Vocalist Grutle Kjellson commented: "The lyrical idea for 'Urjotun' had been spinning around in the chaos in the back of my head for quite a while, when Ivar sent me the riff-demo last autumn. I knew instantly that this was it, the very soundtrack of the rise of the primeval giant, the Urjotun! Our mutual love and fascination for that early Kraut rock scene and for bands like TANGERINE DREAM and KRAFTWERK finally fully ascended in an ENSLAVED song, almost 30 years after we picked up those legendary Kraut albums. It's funny, that in Germany they referred to this kind of music as 'Kosmische Musik,' cosmic music! And that is exactly what this song is about; cosmic chaos. On top of this, director David Hall made a perfect projection and visualization of our troubled minds." "Utgard" track listing: 01. Fires In The Dark 02. Jettegryta 03. Sequence 04. Homebound 05. Utgardr 06. Urjotun 07. Flight Of Thought And Memory 08. Storms Of Utgard 09. Distant Seasons Regarding the "Utgard" album title, the band commented: "'Utgard' bears countless meanings to us; an image, metaphor, an esoteric 'location', a word on its own, etc. — on different levels and layers. From Norse mythology we know it as a landscape were the giants roam; where the gods of Asgard have no control; dangerous, chaotic, uncontrollable and where madness, creativeness, humor and chaos dwells. "The album is a journey into and through 'Utgard'. It is a place of unification of that which is above and that which lies below. It is not about avoiding fear of the pitch-black darkness (it will keep on growing until the next confrontation), but to go into the darkness itself. This is the rebirth of the individual. In a world that has become so obsessed with the false lights of greed, jealousy and egotism this is a necessary journey. "'Utgard' is not a fairytale, it is a vital part of both your mind and your surroundings, and it has been since the dawn of mankind. Acknowledging that this realm exists and is a vital part of the self, has inspired us deeply since the early days of our lives. Enjoy our journey to the outer limits." ENSLAVED unveiled the "Utgard" album cover in a social media post in March. The band stated: "This is the 9th consecutive album cover artwork done by Truls Espedal — and like the album itself it is definitely on the wavelength of the long-distance pulse from the ENSLAVED generator. It is a piece of art that mirrors a massive concept and a band that is also more lyrically and philosophically inspired than ever before. That Truls is a master of his art is established a long time ago, but he has truly outdone himself on this interpretation of our Utgard. Just looking at how the colors and techniques are used to create the depth and grandiosity of the horizon. The perfect travelling companion into these uncharted territories." ENSLAVEDs' last LP, "E", came out in 2017.

MASTODON and LAMB OF GOD are among the artists who appear on the soundtrack of the third installment of the famed "Bill & Ted" film franchise. Both the soundtrack and the film are being released today (Friday, August 28). "Bill & Ted Face The Music" reunites Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves in the title roles for the first time since 1991's "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey". It was produced by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh and directed by Dean Parisot ("Galaxy Quest"). "Bill & Ted Face The Music: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" track listing: 01. BIG BLACK DELTA - "Lost in Time" 02. ALEC WIGDAHL - "Big Red Balloon" 03. WEEZER - "Beginning Of The End (Wyld Stallyns Edit)" 04. COLD WAR KIDS - "Story Of Our Lives" 05. MASTODON - "Rufus Lives" 06. BIG BLACK DELTA - "Circuits Of Time" 07. POORSTACY - "Darkest Night" 08. LAMB OF GOD - "The Death Of Us" 09. FIDLAR - "Breaker" 10. CULTURE WARS - "Leave Me Alone" 11. BLAME MY YOUTH - "Right Where You Belong" 12. WYLD STALLYNS (feat. Animals As Leaders, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah) - "Face The Music" 13. WYLD STALLYNS - "That Which Binds Us Through Time: The Chemical, Physical and Biological Nature of Love; an Exploration of The Meaning of Meaning, Part 1" MASTODON drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor spoke to Rock Sound about "Rufus Lives". Regarding how the track came together, he said: "The song was something that was sort of in the works, you know? It was pretty recent, maybe six months ago. I was going over to Bill's [Kelliher, guitar], and I'd had probably more than a pot of coffee already, and was just amped up, ready to rock. He started playing guitar, we put this thing together, it wasn't even 10 o clock in the morning and we already had this fast, crazy thing going on. It just sounded cool. That was the beginning of it. From there we wrote the song pretty quickly, and then when 'Bill & Ted' came around, they wanted something very specific for a specific scene in the movie. They sent us the scene, and it needed to be like party rock 'n' roll. We sent them a couple things, but they were a little doomy. It's hard for us not to be doomy, you know? They were, like, 'It needed to be at a party, not a funeral!' And we were like, 'Okay, we're sorry!' The notes that we all gravitate towards are all minor, spooky notes, BLACK SABBATH. That's where we live, spooky! But I think we were able to maintain our aesthetic and our musical personalities, and give a party rockin' song. It's basically, like, 'You're at a party, you're in the woods, everybody is having fun, what's on the stereo?' That's the song we needed to write, and what we tried to do. Then we took the situation that 'Bill & Ted' were in, and we applied it to the lyrical content. So I'm singing in it, and Troy's singing." The official "Face The Music" plot synopsis: "Yet to fulfill their rock and roll destiny, the now middle-aged best friends set out on a new adventure when a visitor from the future warns them that only their song can save life as we know it. Along the way, they will be helped by their daughters, a new batch of historical figures, and a few music legends — to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe."

The track is taken from the band's 13th studio album, "Blood & Stone", which will be released on October 23 via Rise Records. The follow-up to 2018's "All I See Is War" was once again tracked at Studio Barbarosa in Gotha, Florida with producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette, who has previously worked with ALTER BRIDGE and SLASH, among others. Guitarist Clint Lowery states: "'Blood From A Stone' was inspired by the endurance and threshold of our band, the wins and the losses, the good and bad years. That we have more to give, more to say and we pull that out of each other." From the pulsating intro of opener "Dying To Live" to the album-closing cover of SOUNDGARDEN's "The Day I Tried To Live", SEVENDUST continues to push the sound it has made their own for more than 25 years. Tracks like "Love", "Blood From A Stone", "Kill Me" and "Against The World" showcases why the band has been adored by fans and critics alike. Lajon Witherspoon, Clint Lowery, John Connolly, Vince Hornsby and Morgan Rose have raised the bar with "Blood & Stone". The new music fits perfectly alongside with the bands most seminal tracks that have become the cornerstone of the band's live performances. Lowery spoke about the new SEVENDUST LP in an interview with Front Row Entertainment Live. The guitarist/vocalist said: "I think this is one of our strongest records in a while. I'm proud of all the music we do. Every band likes to say, 'Oh, yeah, the new record is the best one we've ever done.' I think it's a very reflective record for where we're at musically, where we're at as a band. So that's always a goal. I think we just wanna be genuine. We don't wanna put out a dud record. Not everyone's gonna like it; we understand that. We just try to do what we do best. We're not the heaviest band in the world; we're not a pop-rock band at all either. We're just this aggressive band that has our own thing, and we stay true to that." "Blood & Stone" track listing: 01. Dying To Live 02. Love 03. Blood From A Stone 04. Feel Like Going On 05. The Day I Tried To Live "All I See Is War" was released in May 2018. It marked the group's first album for Rise Records, the Oregon-based metal and hard rock label which was purchased by BMG in 2015. SEVENDUST released four singles and videos from "All I See Is War": "Dirty", "Not Original", "Medicated" and "Risen". In 2016, SEVENDUST received its first-ever Grammy nomination after two decades together as a band. "Thank You", the debut single from 2015's "Kill The Flaw", got the nod for "Best Metal Performance". SMASHING PUMPKINS have released two new songs, "Cyr" and "The Colour of Love". The tracks are expected to appear on the band's upcoming follow-up to 2018's "Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun.", due later in the year via Sumerian. "Shiny And Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun." was SMASHING PUMPKINS' first in over 18 years to feature founding members Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin and James Iha, along with longtime guitarist Jeff Schroeder. "'Cyr' is dystopic folly," Corgan said in a statement, "one soul against the world sort of stuff, set against a backdrop of shifting loyalties and sped up time. To me it stands as both hopeful and dismissive of what is and isn’t possible with faith." Regarding the quarantine performance video for "Cyr", director Linda Strawberry said: "This is a goth fever dream of pent up emotion — an artistic visual release attempting to create a momentary escape from the emotional black cloud hanging over all of us this year. A dark seduction filmed in quarantine at a social distance." Earlier this year, Corgan told Tennessean about SMASHING PUMPKINS' upcoming studio album: "When we got back together with James, we went in with Rick Rubin and did eight songs. It was put out as a formal album, but I said at the time — and I did mean it — in my eyes, it wasn't an album. We didn't approach it like we've approached every other album we'd ever done, which is more like making a movie. "In many ways, this is the first real album [since the reunion] where we've hunkered down and made a classic, 'Let's throw it all at the wall and see what happens' type of PUMPKINS record. I've been working on it for over a year. "This is the first album since the album that came out in 2000, 'Machina', where me, James and Jimmy worked on something for a very long time," he added. "It's got a greater conceptual base, and it's probably a wider swath of music. The last one was kind of like, 'Let's just jump in, record some stuff real fast, and let it be what it is,' ... so I'm excited about this, because we're kind of back in the lane of taking a risk, and trying to bring something new to the table, as opposed to just aping what we're known for." PUMPKINS' 2018 "Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour" reportedly sold over 300,000 tickets across North America and saw them playing sold-out arena shows at venues, including The Forum, United Center and Madison Square Garden. The tour was the band's first in nearly two decades to feature Corgan, Chamberlin and Iha, alongside Schroeder, bassist Jack Bates and keyboardist Katie Cole.
