Matthew Perry and Courtney Cox

Courtney Cox has said she still “talks” with her Friends co-star Matthew Perry following his death last year.

Perry, who is best known for playing Chandler Bing in the hit sitcom, died on October 28 in his home in California, aged 54. Perry’s cause of death was from “cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression”, from the acute effects of drug use.

Cox starred as Monica alongside Perry in Friends from 1994-2004 and their on-screen relationship proved a hit with fans of the show.

In a new interview with CBS, Cox said that she still “senses” Perry around her.

She explained: “I’m so thankful I got to work so closely with him for so many years. He visits me a lot, if we believe in that.”

Cox went on to say that she still talks to Perry, as well as other deceased family members. “I talk to my mum, my dad, Matthew,” she continued. “I feel like there are a lot of people that, I think, guide us…I do sense – I sense Matthew’s around for sure.”

Cox remembered Perry being “so funny” and as someone with a “genuinely huge heart.” She also reflected on how he also “obviously struggled”.

In his 2022 autobiography Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry opened up about his long-term addiction to both alcohol and painkillers.

Cox shared a emotional tribute to Perry last year following his passing.

“I am so grateful for every moment I had with you Matty and I miss you every day,” Cox wrote on Instagram, sharing an image of the two together on screen. “When you work with someone as closely as I did with Matthew, there are thousands of moments I wish I could share. For now, here’s one of my favourites.

“To give a little backstory, Chandler and Monica were supposed to have a one-night fling in London. But because of the audience’s reaction, it became the beginning of their love story.

“In this scene, before we started rolling, he whispered a funny line for me to say. He often did things like that. He was funny and he was kind.”
