David Beckham has revealed that his viral “be honest” moment with wife Victoria Beckham made the director of their recent Netflix documentary angry.
Titled Beckham, the four-part documentary details the personal life of the football icon, including his relationship with Victoria.
In one scene, David interrupted his wife and encouraged her to “be honest” after she claimed her family used to be working class. The amusing moment quickly became a meme on social media, but the former England captain has now revealed that it infuriated director Fisher Stevens (Succession).
“He was angry. He was angry with me. Fisher, I love Fisher. He apparently wanted me out the house, and that particular day was Victoria’s first day of filming,” Beckham explained during a recent appearance on the YouTube series Hot Ones.
“When she was sat there, the door was closed, and I was about to leave for the office, but I made a coffee, and then I saw a spare set of headphones so I put the headphones on and I heard Fisher talking about the whole, our parents and our upbringing,” Beckham continued.
“Then, all of a sudden, I heard her say, ‘We’re working class.’ In that moment, I was like, ‘OK,’ I headed to the door. I opened the door and I saw Fisher’s face, and he was not happy. So that’s really, I was like, ‘Be honest.’ The camera guys were so amazing because, literally panned over to me at the door and that was really a moment that kind of went viral. But Fisher was not happy.”
In the documentary, when asked what initially drew her to David, the former Spice Girls member said: “I just fancied him, and it was as simple as that. I think also we both come from families that work really hard. Both of our parents work very hard, we’re very working class.”
“Be honest!” David called out from the hallway.
“I am being honest,” Victoria replied, before David added: “What car did your dad drive you to school in?”
Stumbling through her response, Victoria said: “It’s not a simple answer. It depends.” Eventually, however, she sheepishly admitted: “OK, in the ’80s, my dad had a Rolls-Royce.”

For the documentary, which was released on Wednesday (October 4), director Fisher Stevens spent 30 hours with David and 14 hours interviewing Victoria, according to Variety.
“It hasn’t all been rosy with his relationship with Victoria,” Stevens told the outlet. “There’s constant controversy. Frankly, I was quite moved by their relationship at the end of the day, and — after all they’ve been through — how much they love each other, and how close they are.”
