David Fincher is reportedly working on a remake of Netflix‘s hit dystopian South Korean series Squid Game.

According to a report from The Playlist, Fincher has reportedly been working on the series for around two years, though neither Netflix nor the Fight Club director have confirmed the production.

Per The Playlist, Fincher first decided to work on a Squid Game remake shortly after the Korean series’ release in 2021, which was a pop culture juggernaut, spawning a reality competition and an upcoming second season. The publication also reports that Fincher has hired writer Dennis Kelly for the project. Kelly has notably worked on films like Matilda The Musical and TV shows like Utopia and The Third Day.

The Playlist‘s report comes after Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos shut down rumours of a potential American Squid Game remake earlier this year. During a visit to the Netflix South Korea offices, Sarandos answered questions from the press, where he emphatically said that rumours of a remake were just a that.

Season two of Squid Game is expected to premiere in December this year.

Squid Game scored a four-star review upon its release in 2021, with Hidzir Junaini writing for NME: “The show’s sharp social critiques, suspenseful competition and sympathetic characters remain largely enthralling throughout. Yet, once Squid Game reaches its conclusion to reveal its puppeteers, its plot points become predictable and the series’ messaging becomes too blunt and didactic.”

Fincher’s most recent project, The Killer, scored a four-star review with Lou Thomas writing for NME: “By many standards, Fincher’s latest would be a potential career-best film, but from the director of so many greats – from Fight Club to Gone Girl, it’s not quite top-tier. This sounds fussy and probably is. That said, The Killer is an entertaining, crowd-pleasing banger that stands up to multiple views. It’s a superior hit-man romp that doesn’t outstay its welcome from a director who misses the target less than his protagonist.”
