David Gilmour has addressed rumours that Pink Floyd‘s ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’ was written to synchronise perfectly with The Wizard Of Oz.
The artist appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (November 7) to discuss the long debated fan theory known as the ‘Dark Side of the Rainbow’. You can watch him give his thoughts below.
When asked if the theory was true, Gilmour joked: “Well of course it was.”
He went on: “We listened to it Polly [Samson, Gilmore’s wife] and I, years ago. Somebody said you put the needle on and on the third roar of the MGM lion, you put the needle on for the beginning of ‘Dark Side’ and there’s these strange synchronicities that happen.”
Gilmour then admitted: “There are these strange coincidences.”
In 2016, it was also suggested that the album syncs perfectly with Star Wars: The Force Awakens by another fan theory after a video was uploaded of the album playing in time with the movie.
Elsewhere on the show he also performed new song ‘Dark And Velvet Nights’, taken from his recent album ‘Luck And Strange’, which dropped in September, his first in nearly 10 years.
Elsewhere, he recently said there’s only one person capable of getting Kate Bush to perform again, and despite “gently” persuading her, he confirmed it’s not him.
Gilmour was an instrumental force in her early career, having come across a teenaged Bush’s demo tapes thanks to mutual friend Ricky Hopper. By the time the Pink Floyd guitarist came across her unique sound, her family had already sent out many similar demos, which had all been turned down by labels.
He stepped in, and after financing the recording of a more professional demo, secured Bush a contract with EMI, which was the start of their long friendship – evident in the fact Bush, who has always been reluctant to perform live, joined Gilmour on stage twice in both 1987 and 2002.
However, Gilmour admitted there’s not much chance of him convincing her to get back on stage. “Kate Bush is the only person who can get Kate Bush back on stage,” he added.
Bush last performed live in 2014, when, after a 35-year hiatus from the stage, she announced ‘Before the Dawn’, a 22-night residency in London.
