Deadpool & Wolverine

Marvel‘s latest film Deadpool & Wolverine is bringing in the big bucks, according to reports.

The film, which released last week, has already broken the record for the highest opening weekend for a film that’s rated R, bringing in an estimate of $205million in North American studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That has far surpassed the previous record, which was originally helped by the first Deadpool film with $132million.

Internationally, Deadpool & Wolverine‘s opening weekend has racked up an additional $233.3million, for a total of $438.3million globally. The feat isn’t only a big deal for R-rated films; it’s also big among all films.

The Hollywood Reporter also notes that the film has now clinched the eighth largest filming opening of all time. Among breaking records, the film is also the biggest opening ever for stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. It’s also the biggest July opening of all time, the biggest opening of 2024 so far. It is also the biggest film opening since 2022’s Avatar: The Way of the Water.

Paul Bradshaw wrote in a three-star review of Deadpool & Wolverine for NME: “Despite the A-list distractions (no spoilers here), Deadpool & Wolverine is really all about Reynolds and Jackman. In fact, it’s really all about Reynolds – with Jackman doing a heroic job of playing the surly straight man trying to keep up with Reynolds’ sweary killer clown. The first two Deadpool films were funny and violent and original, but this one shows Marvel’s most gloriously inappropriate superhero at his very best and worst.”

In other Marvel news, while at Comic Con this past weekend, the company revealed that it will be revamping its next two Avengers films to focus on a different villain. Instead of Johnathan Majors’ Kang The Conquerer, the franchise will now focus on Victor Von Doom – aka Dr Doom – played by a returning Robert Downey Jr..
