Bungie is already teasing the future of Destiny 2 after releasing The Final Shape expansion.
Final Shape launched earlier this month and brought an end to 10 years of stories and adventures. However, Bungie is already teasing fans with what comes next.
In a new video, titled The Journey Ahead, developers gave fans a better look at episodes, which are due to replace seasons. Typically, four seasons were released every year but these “larger, content-packed” episodes will be split into three, six-week-long acts.
These episodes will include standalone stories but will also “build up mysteries for the future of Destiny 2,” according to creative lead Jason Reynolds. The first of these episodes will introduce objects of “immense power” called echoes. These items are a direct result of the battle with The Witness, which featured in The Final Shape expansion.
Bungie also gave a quick glimpse at follow-up “dark-fantasy” episode Revenant, which is Fallen-themed and introduces a new potion-crafting system, and Hersey, which will take players back to the Dreadnaught. Each Destiny 2 episode will have “twists and turns”. Year 10 will also give players more agency in their decisions, and the rewards they receive.
The first episode launched this week, with further episodes due to release between July and October. The video also gave players a quick glimpse at year 11 on Destiny 2. Text reading “Codename: Frontiers” appears, before a message saying “the journey continues. 2025”.
This mysterious Codename: Frontiers hasn’t been advertised as an episode, with many fans speculating it could be a new expansion.
Executive creative director Luke Smith previously shared a message about the future of Destiny 2. “The Final Shape is the culmination of a ten-year journey. It’s a journey that will end with you inside The Traveler, facing the Witness. But facing The Witness is not the end of Destiny 2, and it’s definitely not the end of Destiny,” he teased. “After you face The Witness, we’re gonna tell you what’s coming next to Destiny 2 and beyond. We’ll see you soon.”
In other news, Activision has clarified that the size of the upcoming Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 won’t be as excessively large as previously advertised.
