A new Exorcist film is in the works with horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan tapped to direct.

Per a report by Deadline Hollywood, horror filmhouse Blumhouse has confirmed that Flanagan will lead a new entry in the Exorcist universe, telling an entirely new story. It has also confirmed that the movie will not be tied to last year’s The Exorcist: Believer from director David Gordon Green.

In a press statement announcing Flanagan’s attachment to the next Exorcist film, Blumhouse promised that the director’s movie will be a “radical new take” on the horror franchise that has spanned nearly five decades.

Flanagan – best known for Doctor Sleep and his acclaimed Netflix projects The Haunting Of Hill House, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher – will also write and produce the currently untitled Exorcist film.

The news comes after David Gordon Green exited the Exorcist franchise earlier this year due to last year’s Believer poor performance at the box office. A trilogy was originally planned for Green’s Exorcist films, with a sequel titled The Exorcist: Deceiver previously inked to arrived in 2025. That film has since been scrapped following Green’s departure from the franchise.

In a four-star review of The Exorcist: Believer, NME‘s Alex Flood wrote: “Fans have waited half a century for another decent Exorcist movie, and they won’t have to wait much longer. Believer isn’t as petrifying as the first, which had people fleeing theatres just from watching the trailer, yet there are some disturbing moments… This might not be what fans expect from an Exorcist movie, but they’ll be even more surprised that it’s actually watchable.”

A release date, cast and plot details for Mike Flanagan’s Exorcist film have yet to be announced.

Flanagan most recently released the horror series The Fall of the House of Usher last year, ending his six-year relationship with Netflix. The eight-episode series follows the gloomy downfall of pharmaceutical kingpin Roderick Usher (played by Bruce Greenwood) and his rich family who are often at loggerheads – much like HBO’s Succession, albeit with spooky twists.
