A preliminary search by MTV News shows that at least 16 schools across the country have implemented or are considering implementing facial recognition cameras on their campuses. But problems with the tech keep popping up: Research has shown it has adverse effects on students of color by misidentifying them. It could also perpetuate the school-to-prison pipeline, a trend that, with the increase of on-campus policing, sees students funneled into the criminal justice system. The technology isn’t federally regulated, and individuals have no rights over the data these cameras collect on minors or adults. What’s more, we don’t know the full scope of how many schools are using it, or what happens to the data they’re collecting.
