James Hetfield performs with Metallica in 2024.

A US-based sports charity is offering metal fans the opportunity to have a dinner date with James Hetfield.

Developed by the Adaptive Sports Foundation – a 501(c)(3) non-profit that looks to make athletics more accessible to those with physical and cognitive disabilities and chronic illnesses – the auction is giving one fan the chance to have dinner with the Metallica frontman.

According to the page, the dinner will have to take place in Edwards, Colorado, which isn’t far from the vocalist’s home in Vail, and the date of the dinner must be scheduled within three months of the end of the auction.

The winner will also be allowed to bring up to three additional guests for the night, however, the rules also stipulate that the winner of the auction will have to foot the entire bill for the night.

Travel and accommodation aren’t included in the package and the whole thing is expected to be wrapped up within two hours, that being said, the winner is allowed to take a photo with the metal legend and can bring along something small to be signed.

The auction is open until next Wednesday (August 21) and at time of writing the bid stands at $28,500 (£22,112). This comes from just 21 bids, and the next minimum bid is currently set at $31,000 (£24,000).

In other Metallica news, the thrash metal icons recently announced the launch of a new Cliff Burton exhibition via their digital museum. Titled Orion: A Tribute To Cliff Burton, the digital exhibit is one of four collections scheduled to honour the metal icons’ late bassist, who died in 1986.

The digital exhibition includes a look at archival photographs, old video interviews, letters penned by the musician and more. Besides memorabilia from his time with Metallica, the exhibition also showcases items from his personal life, courtesy of his friends and family. The first of four exhibitions is currently ongoing, with a second drop in the Metallica Black Box museum being shared earlier this week.

Elsewhere, the band’s 1991 self-titled album – also known as ‘The Black Album’ – recently crossed 750 weeks on the Billboard 200 charts. The album was led by five singles: ‘Enter Sandman’, ‘The Unforgiven’, ‘Nothing Else Matters’, ‘Wherever I May Roam’ and ‘Sad But True’.
