Paramount has confirmed it has cancelled the Halo TV series after two seasons.
Development for a TV adaptation of the Halo franchise began back in 2013, with the announcement taking centre stage at Xbox’s E3 presentation that same year. After a few speed bumps, it eventually premiered in 2022 as part of Paramount’s new streaming service, Paramount+.
A second season of Halo aired earlier this year, but Paramount has now confirmed it will not be returning in the future. “Paramount+ can confirm that Halo will not move forward with a third season on the service,” said a statement, via Variety. “We are extremely proud of this ambitious series and would like to thank our partners at Xbox, 343 Industries and Amblin Television, along with showrunner and executive producer David Wiener, his fellow executive producers, the entire cast led by Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief and the amazing crew for all their outstanding work. We wish everyone the best going forward.”
Despite positive reviews, many Halo fans took issue with the adaptation since it strayed so far away from the source material. It didn’t help that season one showrunner admitted the team “didn’t look at the game [or] talk about the game”, instead focusing on the characters and the wider world.
“I’m still convinced the Halo show was a completely unrelated new IP that the showrunners were forced to slap the Halo brand on top of,” wrote one fan on Reddit, following the cancellation. “So much potential. All they had to do was follow the source material,” added another. “A true master class in failure despite every opportunity to succeed.”
“All I had to do was watch one trailer where he takes his helmet off to understand the show was butchered and I didn’t even need to waste my time or anger,” said a third.
Responding to the news of the cancellation, one fan wrote” “They saw Fallout‘s 16 Emmy nominations and gave up”.
“Fallout and The Last Of Us stuck fairly close to the games and they were both universally praised by the gamers and general audience. I wonder if anyone in Hollywood will take note,” said another fan.
However, a number of fans have been sharing their frustrations that the Halo show was just beginning to pick up steam, with Master Chief finally discovering the Halo at the end of the second season and leaving things with a sizable cliffhanger.

According to Variety, Xbox and 343 Industries will try and get the Halo show picked up by another platform. “We deeply appreciate the millions of fans who propelled the series to be a global success and we remain committed to broadening the Halo universe in different ways in the future,” 343 Industries said in a statement.
