Fans of the historical fantasy series Renegade Nell have been reacting to the news that the show has been cancelled after one season.
The show was written by Sally Wainwright (Happy Valley), directed by Ben Taylor, and followed the young fugitive Nell Jackson (Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland) who becomes the most feared highwaywoman in 18th century England after being framed for murder.
It premiered on Disney+ in March, with the cast being rounded out by Joely Richardson, Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed, Craig Parkinson, Frank Dillane and Iz Hesketh.
Many fans of the show have been sharing their frustration at the news, with one X/Twitter user writing: “They canceled Renegade Nell?!? Where were all the regency girlies? They would have loved it. How much do I have to pay to uncancel it? I can’t be left alone with that ending. I need the gang back.”

Another bemoaned the show’s demise, compared to the ongoing success of some rival franchises. “Can’t believe Renegade Nell is being cancelled by Disney+,” they wrote. “Way better than any of the dull Star Wars spin offs that they keep churning out. Watch it before it goes.”

News that the show had not been recommissioned was confirmed by Deadline earlier today (July 30), who cited the fact that the show had not reached the threshold for renewal at Disney+.
There had been hope among fans that a second season would materialise, with Harland herself speaking earlier in the year about how she wanted to see the show develop.
“I feel like we’ve only just set up this world, and it’s such an interesting one, the possibilities are endless,” Harland told The Guardian. “I even said the other day: ‘If this goes really well, shall we do two and three together?’”
However, a Disney spokesperson has confirmed the news with a statement that read: “Disney+ Original series, Renegade Nell, will not be returning for a second season on the service. We’re incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor. We’d like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast – led by Louisa Harland – and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future.”
