The Coalition, which worked on Gears Of War 4 and 5, has shown off a new tech demo built in Unreal Engine 5.
Titled ‘Alpha Point’, the tech demo shows off the level of visual fidelity the team may aim for in any future titles. The Coalition presented the trailer at GDC 2021 last week but has since made it available on YouTube.
Alpha Point features real-time lighting and reflections and has over one million triangles, which are the polygons used to create and render video game assets.
Technical director Kate Rayner and technical art director Colin Penty, who presented the demo at GDC, also revealed a real-time character rendering test. The test ran in real-time on an Xbox Series X and rendered a character with realistic-looking facial features and lifelike armour materials.
The Coalition has previously stated that it will not announce any new projects for some time, as the studio adapts to working in Unreal Engine 5. However, a now-deleted LinkedIn post may suggest otherwise. A developer at the studio listed ‘level designer on new IP’ on their profile, hinting that The Coalition is indeed working on something new.
Unreal revealed the latest development of the Unreal Engine last year, announcing the game development technology would work with last-gen and the PS5, Xbox Series S and X consoles. Unreal Engine 5’s primary feature is Nanite, a system that intelligently renders relevant parts of a scene only, allowing for extremely great detail.
Unreal Engine 5 also features Lumen, Unreal’s answer to ray tracing. Lumen, much like ray tracing, reacts to changes in the scene dynamically but takes less computing power to do so.
In other gaming news, many former and current Activision Blizzard staff have criticised the company’s reaction to a discrimination lawsuit filed by the state of California.
