Ghost have released two new animated music videos – check them out below.

The masked Swedish metallers have shared two animated clips – one of which was shown in their recent concert film RITE HERE RITE NOW, and the other for their new single ‘The Future Is A Foreign Land’.

Despite ‘Mary On A Cross’ being released in 2019, the song never got a full-fledged music video – even after it went viral in 2022 on TikTok. So instead of sharing live concert footage of ‘Mary On A Cross’ in RITE HERE RITE NOW, the band chose to craft an animated video to tell the story of the track.

Speaking to NME about the film, director Alex Ross Perry explained why live concert footage of ‘Mary On A Cross’ was swapped out for an animated video: “There was always meant to be a music video for this song, but it never came together, and Tobias was never able to tell the story that he wanted to. The band released a professionally shot live video for this song a while ago, and so Tobias said in the movie, it can’t just be that.

“The animated video is the result of that. And everything that he wanted would’ve made a $200,000 music video that would end up being a four-minute segment in a movie. So I said we could get everything he wanted in the video if it’s an animated sequence. Every shot, every location. And there had never been a Ghost animation prior, so it checked all the boxes.”

As for ‘The Future Is A Foreign Land’, the song marks the band’s latest release. It closed out RITE HERE RITE NOW, and was officially released last month – albeit without a video to accompany it. Now, another animated clip has been revealed, and expands on ‘Mary On A Cross’. Watch the video for ‘The Future Is A Foreign Land’ below.

Ghost creator Tobias Forge explained of the track’s theme to NME: “The message is that there’s a great lesson lost if you look at what is going on in the world now and what took us here… if you’re lucky enough to experience this film in the cinema, you’re pretty well off. You’re one of the lucky ones and you should enjoy life, embrace it and do everything in your power to make life better for you and everyone you know.”

He continued: “But remember the cost that it took for mankind in the past 55 years to get here and the sort of shit that we put each other through fighting for what we believe is a better world. It’s meant to make you feel thankful somehow that we can laugh at certain things and be at a fictional rock concert in this world.”

NME rated RITE HERE RITE NOW four stars, writing: “If you’re a casual fan, RITE HERE RITE NOW makes for a fun, enjoyable experience that should tide you over until their next album or tour. But if you’re a die-hard, this is essential viewing – not just for its exhilarating live moments, but for the next part of the gripping Ghost saga.”
