Hunter Schafer has opened up about the infidelity in her relationship with Dominic Fike that led to their breakup.
Over a year after Schafer and her Euphoria co-star Fike broke up in April 23, Schafer claimed it was his infidelity during their relationship that led to them parting ways.
Speaking on the August 7 episode of Call Her Daddy, Schafer said: âPart of why the relationship ended is because I got cheated on for the first time. Itâs part of my truth, but that fundamentally changed me as a person.â
Schafer explained that Dominic was the first cis, straight-identifying man sheâd ever dated and admitted to blaming herself for the relationshipâs demise at first.
âAs a trans woman, with a man who has never dated that [type of person] beforeâŠBecause of the way Iâve been socialised as a trans woman, itâs been this crux in my life of what life has been so hard sometimes, I was like, âOh, god is this it? Can I just not?ââ
âIt has everything to do with that personâŠand whatever kind of pain theyâre in or whatever theyâre dealing with.â
âYou always know,â she continued, admitting she looked through his phone for confirmation. âBecause I knew, I went to the phoneâwhich Iâm not proud of.â
Despite this, she admitted: âIt was one of the cleaner breakups Iâve had. We both recognised that âThis is not working and we canât do this. We gotta go our own separate ways.â It was so hard. We loved each other. He was a really special person.
âHe saw me exactly as who I was, which was amazing.â
NME has reached out to representatives of Fike for comment.
Schafer plays Gretchen, who moves to the German Alps to live with her father, but becomes disturbed when her fatherâs boss embroils the family in a sinister plot.
The film, which also stars Dan Stevens, premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and will be in cinemas from Friday (August 9).
With reviews now out, the film sits at a strong 79 per cent on the aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising director Tilman Singerâs âinventive flairâ, and singling out Schafer for particular praise.
Meanwhile, back in April, Schafer said she no longer wants to play transgender roles. After breaking through with her performance as transgender high schooler Jules Vaughn in hit HBO series Euphoria, but said she now wants to refocus her career.
âI worked so hard to get to where I am, past these really hard points in my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on,â she said.
