Terry Gilliam and Johnny Depp attend the UK Premiere of 'Jeanne Du Barry'

Johnny Depp will be playing Satan in his next film, director Terry Gilliam has confirmed.

Speaking to French publication Premiere, Gilliam – who has in the past directed films such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 12 Monkeys and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – spoke about his next him, The Carnival at the End of Days.

Per Gilliam’s detailing of the upcoming film, it has been revealed that Depp will portray Satan, while Jeff Bridges plays God. Adam Driver and Jason Momoa have also been cast in the film, though details surrounding their roles are currently unknown.

Gilliam explained to Premiere that The Carnival at the End of Days will be a “comedy where God decides to destroy Humanity. And the only one trying to save us is Satan. Because he needs people in hell, otherwise he won’t have a job for eternity!”

The director also added that the upcoming movie “will be very funny for those who like to be offended”. The film is expected to begin filming in January 2025.

This isn’t the first time that Gilliam and Depp have worked together. Depp previously starred in Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Similarly, Bridges has appeared in Gilliam’s The Fisher King.

In early May, Bridges provided an update on his health more than three years after revealing his cancer diagnosis. After revealing his diagnosis in 2020, he said the following year that he had gone into remission. Now, the actor says that his “health is great” and that he’s “not thinking too much about the past”.

In April, Johnny Depp hit out at Hollywood after he had won a defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard over a 2018 op-ed she wrote in The Washington Post. Since 2018, Depp had lost numerous rolls in Hollywood and had not been hired for new films until after winning the case.
