Kate Hudson has opened up about her venture into the music industry – two decades after she first made her acting debut – saying that she finally made the leap after finding more confidence.
The actor-turned-singer first made a name for herself as an actor, starring in Hollywood blockbusters including Almost Famous, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, Bride Wars and more.
However, 20 years after she first hit the big screen, she confirmed her plans to embark on a music career, and dropped her debut solo album ‘Glorious’ last month. She has made multiple appearances to promote the LP, including performances of her tracks on both The Voice and on The Howard Stern Show.
While some fans have been caught off-guard by her singing ability, the venture into her time as a singer also comes following her making musical appearances on Nine, Music and Glee.
Now, in a new interview with Variety, Hudson has explained why it took her 20 years to make the leap into the music industry, and shared that a large part of it was to do with her fear of rejection.
“I think that’s why it took me so long to be open with music, in this capacity,” she said. “If I felt rejected in it at an earlier time in my life, I think that it would’ve wounded me in a way that I probably knew deep down I wasn’t prepared for.
“Rejection, generally, I can handle [and] I’ve created a very tough skin for the acting world.”
She continued: “When it comes to this, though, it felt so vulnerable that if I would’ve done this in my late twenties, I think it would’ve been very hard for me to not sort of get carried into what people were saying. And at this age and where I’m at in my life, I don’t have that same fear of rejection anymore.
“I really just want to share it. I recognise that you’re not gonna win everybody over. But I can’t be led by that fear, or else I just would never put art into the world.”
Aside from her recently sharing ‘Glorious’, Hudson has also continued to work as an actor, and the outlet reports that the interview took place as she was wrapping up the filming of another project.
The shoot was for the Netflix comedy series Running Point, which lists Mindy Kaling among the creators. It is set in the world of basketball in which she plays a “Jeannie Buss-type figure”.
“I hope we do four seasons. You know, I’ve never felt that way before,” she said of the project.
First announcing her switch to music, Hudson dropped her debut single ‘Talk About Love’ back in January. The Academy Award-nominated actress wrote the song with her fiancé Danny Fujikawa and Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes), and it arrived after she had signed a deal with Virgin Music Group.
