Katy Perry has praised Charli XCX and her ‘Brat‘ culture phenomenon, calling her a “super mega pop star”.

Last Friday (July 26), Perry was a guest on the British chat show The One Show to promote her upcoming seventh album, ‘143’. After a segment on the announcement of shortlist for the 2024 Mercury Prize – which ‘Brat’ appears on – presenter Roman Kemp prompted the California singer to talk about “an artist [she’s] a big fan of”.

“This is a ‘Brat’ couch,” she said of the sofa, a similar colour to that of Charli’s lauded album. “It’s a ‘Brat’ summer and your couches are ‘Brat’. Your trash [cans] are ‘Brat’. You guys are really ‘Brat’ fans.”

She continued:: “Of course, I think she is in her prime right now. She’s gotten all of her flowers, she works so hard and is a super mega pop star.”

Charli xcx released her highly-anticipated sixth studio album, ‘Brat’ last month. In a four-star review, NME said the record is one where the polymath “fully commits to the dancefloor” and proves “that going her own way will always sound pretty good”.

The album’s lime green artwork became a meme and the term “Brat Summer” soon went viral. Paired with ‘Brat”s themes of hedonism and rebellion, the social trend encouraged people to have fun and be free, similar to Megan Thee Stallion‘s 2019 ‘Hot Girl Summer’ movement.

The British pop star also did many ‘PARTYGIRL’ DJ sets – including her recent Boiler Room takeover in Ibiza and her special Glastonbury performance on The Levels stage, where she invited Robyn and The xx’s Romy out with her. She even endorsed presidential candidate Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 US election, stating that the current Vice President “IS brat”. Her tweet caused CNN‘s political journalists to attempt to describe what ‘Brat’ means.

Last week, XCX responded to outlets such as Pitchfork and Dazed saying “Brat summer” is over. In a caption, she alluded to dropping new music, writing: “oh? see u next week :)”.

Earlier this month, Katy Perry announced she will be releasing new album ‘143’ this September. In a statement given to Variety, she said, “I set out to create a bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album with the symbolic 143 numerical expression of love as a throughline message.” Perry has since called the album a “dance party and everybody’s invited”.

The album’s lead single ‘Woman’s World’ was released on July 11. Despite being a song meant to empower women worldwide, it came under fire after it was revealed that the controversial producer Dr. Luke – a longtime collaborator of Perry’s – was involved in making the song. ‘Woman’s World’ has since failed to chart in the UK or break the Top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
