Kesha performs during Lollapalooza at Grant Park on August 01, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois

Kesha has revealed that she wants to re-record her debut single ‘TiK ToK’ when she has the “legal rights” to – find out what the singer had to say about the track below.

The singer-songwriter shared a pensive and reflective post on X (formerly Twitter) last night (August 7) about her debut single, which is now 15 years old. In the post, she wrote about how proud she is of the track after all this time, and opened up about wanting to re-record the track with a new lyric to reflect how much things have changed since its initial release.

Kesha wrote in the post: “‘TiK ToK’ was the first single that I put into this world that had my voice AND my name credited!!!! I remember making it fun and happy because that’s how I felt and wanted others to feel. What I’m so proud of is that’s how this song STILL makes me feel, through it all, and those are emotions I want all of us to connect to. 15 (!!!!!!) years later, I see this song as a snapshot into the way I saw the world at the time. That girl was naive and wild and playful. This song eternalizes a side of myself that I love very much, and now see I have to protect fiercely.”

She continued: “The world has changed so much and so have I. I absolutely love the new lyric change. (Shout out to @reneerapp) Yes it is permanent. I will re-record it when I have legal rights to! Now, my first baby stands for so much. It stands for fiercely protecting my fun and unadulterated joy, in myself and in others. The whole ride has been absolute insanity, but the JOY is still riding. I hope you all can find 3 1/2 minutes of play in this song and connect with your wild child-like joy.”

The lyric-change in question stems from the song’s opening line: “Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy“. When the track was first written and released, Diddy was on top of the world – he had a thriving music career and was the owner of several successful businesses and brands. Now, however, things are much more grim for the hip-hop mogul.

In recent months, Diddy has been at the center of numerous scandals and allegations, including the sexual, physical and mental abuse of his former parter Cassie Ventura. He has also been accused of abuse against many others and alleged ties to sex trafficking that resulted in a raid of his homes in Miami and Los Angeles. He has continually denied all allegations against him, and issued an apology after video footage of him attacking Cassie in 2016 was unveiled – more allegations have since been surfaced.

At Coachella 2024, Reneé Rapp brought out the Kesha during her set to perform the song. While on stage, Kesha changed the lyrics to instead sing for the first time, “Wake up in the morning like fuck P Diddy”. The change has stuck ever since.

More recently for Kesha, the singer performed at Lollapalooza in Chicago last week, where fans believe Kesha dissed Katy Perry in a ‘Backstabber’ performance. The song’s bridge features the line “Katie’s to my left, rippin’ my style”. However, during the performance, Kesha only sings the first part before expressing disgust on her face.

Given that Kesha hasn’t been quiet about Perry’s recent work with Dr Luke, who she accused of emotional abuse and sexual assault in a decade-long lawsuit, fans believed it was a jab at the ‘Woman’s World’ singer. The week prior, Kesha opened up about her “beautiful” upcoming album, and explained how it feels like the start of a new chapter.
