Like A Dragon: Yakuza

Like A Dragon’s studio head has praised the upcoming Amazon Prime Video live-action adaptation.

The first Like A Dragon game was developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio in 2005 and went on to spawn a number of sequels and spin-offs. A movie adaptation was released in Japan in 2007, and now Prime Video are gearing up to release their take with Like A Dragon: Yakuza.

The studio shared a first-look trailer over the weekend, and now those in charge of the video games have spoken about the adaptation.

At the recent San Diego Comic-Con, Sega shared a video of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama talking about his reaction to the adaptation, and he seemed stoked on the show.  “When I saw the ending, I couldn’t help but scream,” he explained (via VGC) with the end of the first episode featuring a “major surprise”.

“I jumped on my feet in my office, excited by the drama’s twist,” he continued. “My hands were trembling as I took a smoke in our smoking room right after that. I was that affected. I thought it was amazing.”

Yokoyama went on to say that while the adaptation of Like A Dragon: Yakuza is loosely inspired by the original game, it does veer away from the source material. The show will focus on Kazuma Kiryu (Ryoma Takeuchi) and Akira Nishikiyama (Kento Kaku). “To tell you the truth, their portrayal of the characters are totally different from the original story,” he explained. “When you see how they fight in this drama, it’s obvious they were not recreating the characters from the game. But that’s what’s great about it.”

“Aspects of the original’s essence are built in everywhere. The game fans who love the original story will understand. The spirit is there. They’ll see surprises almost every 30 seconds. If you’re new to the game, it’s a new world. If you know it, you’ll be grinning the whole time,”he added.

The first three episodes of Like A Dragon: Yakuza will be released October 24, with the final three hitting Prime Video on November 1.

In other news, Microsoft has revealed just how many people played Fallout following the success of the Prime Video adaptation of the beloved franchise.
