NME’s latest star of The Cover, Berwyn, has shared a playlist exclusively to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.

The Trinidad-born, Romford-raised rapper is on this week’s (July 15) edition of The Cover, a renewal of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read the profile of Berwyn here, written by Fred Garratt-Stanley and featuring photography by Tamiym.

Accompanying the story is an exclusive playlist Berwyn has compiled, ‘How To Make A Berwyn’, featuring Bon Iver, Frank Ocean and Kendrick Lamar and more. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.

Over the years, Berwyn Du Bois has emerged as a singular voice in UK rap, earning a Mercury nomination and a win at the BandLab NME Awards 2022. Last Friday he unveiled his long-gestating debut album ‘Who Am I’, which documents the twists, turns and traumas of living and growing while undocumented in the UK – and how the driving force of love has carried him him throughout. “There’s something about what I’ve experienced through love, both romantically and otherwise, that has empowered me in this fuckery,” he told NME.

Elsewhere in his Cover story, Berwyn reflects on the continual loss of opportunities that marked his upbringing as an undocumented immigrant, the negativity and aggression on the record, his goal to fill the “massive left of centre void in all of Black culture”, and more.
