Arriving earlier this week via Young, the track first made an appearance during Jamie xx’s 2021 headline set at All Points East, and is the first collaboration between the cross-continentally-based DJs and producers – who made the track through video calls during the pandemic.
After over three years in the works, the single finally received its official release yesterday (April 15) on Young. It premiered on Radio 1’s Future Artists with Jack Saunders and, in an interview with the host, Jamie xx also confirmed that a new solo LP is on the way, which will mark his first since 2015’s ‘In Colour’.
Listen to the storming new track below, which captures the same charm of ‘90s house, and embeds some old-school disco horns at the midway point.
‘Baddy On The Floor’ marks Jamie xx and Honey Dijon’s first time working together on a song, although the two have previously appeared on the same line-ups in the past, including The xx’s 2018 Night + Day festival in Bilbao and Jamie xx’s curated Manchester Warehouse Project in 2021.
The xx producer made his comeback at the start of the year with the single ‘It’s So Good’ – his first new music under his own name since 2022. He also broke out ‘Baddy On The Floor’ during his Coachella set over the weekend.
At time of writing, further details of the upcoming LP have yet to be announced, although it has been confirmed that Jamie xx is set to perform at this year’s edition of Glastonbury Festival on June 28.
This slot at Worthy Farm will be followed by two US festival appearances over the summer – the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago on July 20 and the HARD Summer Music Festival in Inglewood, California on August 3. Find tickets to all upcoming shows here.
Aside from his solo material, Jamie xx also recently teamed up with The xx bandmate Romy for her critically acclaimed album ‘Mid Air’. For this, he co-produced the single ‘Enjoy Your Life’, which also featured contributions from Fred Again.. and Stuart Price.
He also took on production duties for The xx’s Oliver Sim – contributing to the acclaimed 2022 debut solo album ‘Hideous Bastard’.
As for new material from the band, Romy spoke about the plans for new material during an interview with NME at the BRIT Awards 2024.
“[The xx have] been in the studio since I last spoke to NME and we’re in the studio again next week, so we’re meeting up regularly,” she explained. “It’s been really good. I think we’ve all spent time apart and it’s healthy to miss each other.”
Romy added: “We’re just keeping it really open and we’re up for trying new things, but it sounds like us. That’s all I can say right now.
“We’ve learned a lot from our different solo projects and it’s cool to learn from each other again. We grew up together and we had a lot of experiences, but to then have time apart and learn new skills, get new musical ideas and experiences and compare them… it’s been a healthy break.”
The xx’s third and most recent studio album, ‘I See You’, was released in 2017.
