Lorde has praised Charli XCX‘s new album ‘Brat’ amid rumours that one of the featured songs is about her.
Charli released her sixth studio effort today (June 7), following on from 2022’s ‘Crash’. In a four-star review, NME said that the singer “fully commits to the dancefloor” with the project.
“These heady songs also see XCX at her most raw, smuggling the reflections that spill out in the early hours of the morning through the guise of club bangers,” it added.
Taking to Instagram Stories, Lorde expressed her admiration for the record and Charli as an artist.
“The only album I’ve ever presaved is out today. Charli just cooked this one different,” she wrote above the ‘Brat’ cover artwork. “So much grit, grace & skin in the game.”
Lorde continued: “I speak for all of us when I say it’s an honour to be moved, changed and gagged by her work. There is NO ONE like this bitch. Brava and welcome Brat.”

Lorde’s comments come as fans speculate that the track ‘Girl, So Confusing’ delves into Charli’s complicated feelings about the New Zealand artist. In the first verse, she sings: “Yeah, I don’t know if you like me/ Sometimes I think you might hate me/ Sometimes I think I might hate you/ Maybe you just wanna be me.”
Later, Charli adds: “People say we’re alike/ They say we’ve got the same hair.”
The singer recently admitted to once being “super jealous” of the success of Lorde’s 2013 debut single, ‘Royals’.
“You piece all this stuff together in your brain, like: ‘She was into my music. She had big hair; I had big hair. She wore black lipstick; I once wore black lipstick’,” Charli explained. “You create these parallels and think, ‘Well, that could have been me’. But it couldn’t have because we’re completely different people.”
She continued: “I wasn’t making music that sounded anything like ‘Royals’. I think you just read what you want into it because you’re feeling insecure about your own work.”
Charli went on to say that she was now on good terms with Lorde: “You get over it and then you try to figure out all the things that are unique about you and you pursue that, and then probably in five months you have a breakdown about something else.”
Ironically, Charli was mistaken for the ‘Royals’ singer in an old interview, which has now become a meme among fans. On one occasion, she jokingly claimed that she ghost-wrote the song in question.
During an interview with NME in 2022, Charli revealed that the pair once came close to dressing up as each other for Halloween. “I did have a really, really good idea,” she said. “I thought I could be Lorde for Halloween, and maybe cover ‘Royals’.”
She added: “I didn’t want it to seem like I was trolling, so I actually texted Lorde. And I was like, ‘Hey, I’m thinking about being you for Halloween, it’s all a good vibe, how do you feel about it?’
“And she was like, ‘Yeah, great. I’ll just be you’. Then we both realised we’re as lazy as each other when it comes to putting effort into Halloween. We’ll just park the idea for a year when we can be bothered, but the thought was there. It’s definitely a break the internet moment.”
Charli is set to showcase ‘Brat’ on a UK arena tour with Shygirl later this year. She’ll also embark on a run of dates in North America with Troye Sivan. You can find any remaining tickets here (UK) and here (North America).
In other news, Lorde has been teasing her fourth studio album on social media. Her third record, ‘Solar Power’, was released in 2021.
