Mamma Mia 3 is reportedly in the works, according to cast member Christine Baranski.

The actress, who plays Tanya Chesham-Leigh in the ABBA jukebox musical film series, gave the new update to The Hollywood Reporter, saying she had met with producer Judy Craymer in London.

“She is planning Mamma Mia 3,” she told the publication. “She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say! But, it’s not like, “Oh, I wish it could happen!” Judy Kramer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together.”

“We’ll all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast,” she said separately, “I hope.”

Baranski also said Mamma Mia was “just the kind of movie that makes people happy,” adding: “Witnessing how much people are showing up for these Democratic campaign rallies now, there’s a lot of smiles, a lot of laughter. People are drawn to happiness and to joy, not doom and gloom.

Mamma Mia made so many millions of people around the world happy,” she continued, saying: “Is it a little dumb, a little campy? That’s part of its charm.

“When I’m in Europe, I can’t tell you how many little girls want to be photographed with Tanya. It troubles me a little, that Tanya’s their favorite character. (Laughs.) But, hey, we’re always attracted to that kind of snappy, sexy lady.”

Baranski then finally joked: “Maybe we can get Kamala to use one of the Abba songs?”

Rumours of a third Mamma Mia movie first started swirling back in 2020, where producer Judy Craymer revealed that a third film was in the works.

Since then, Amanda Seyfried revealed that she would participate in a third sequel, but Universal “probably can’t afford us to be honest”.

“I hate to say it, because would I do Mamma Mia 3 for free — of course I would — but that’s not the business we’re in. What’s fair is fair, and I feel like a third film is gonna come down to something stupid like whether or not Universal wants to pay the money.”

Meanwhile Meryl Streep – whose character was killed off for the third sequel – said she was “up for anything,” adding: “I’ll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there. I told [producer Judy Craymer] if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died.”

She joked: “We may have to call it Grand-Mamma Mia! by the time we make it!”
