Maren Morris and Brittany Aldean

Maren Morris has said that she “stands by” her “insurrection Barbie” comments aimed at Brittany Aldean.

The two entered a feud two years ago, when lifestyle influencer Aldean made a comment on Instagram, thanking her parents for letting her embrace her “tomboy” phase without “changing my gender”. She then went on to criticise what she described as “the genital mutilation of children”, referring to gender-affirming healthcare.

Following the comments, Morris tweeted in response, saying: “It’s so easy to, like, not be a scumbag human? Sell your clip-ins and zip it, Insurrection Barbie.”

Later, Aldean doubled down on her comments during an episode of the Try That in a Small Town podcast (via Billboard), speaking alongside her husband, country star Jason Aldean, and criticised Morris for the tweet.

“She’s got a group of friends here in Nashville that, they just have it out for me for whatever reason … to be so pro-woman and all the bullshit … you’re not, because I’ve never said a word to you and you come for me,” she said last month.

“She started to make fun of my business, which at the time was hair extensions… But to me it’s, like, once again, going back to the feminist movement. Aren’t you supposed to be all peace, love and inclusivity and all the things? Why are you coming for me like that about my business?”

Now, Morris has made an appearance on the Cosmopolitan series Cheap Shots, and confirmed that she has no intention of taking back the comments any time soon.

During the interview, Morris had to honestly answer some tricky questions to avoid taking shots of cheap liquor. During one part, she was asked if she had any posts online that she regrets sharing.

“I don’t really have any tweets that I’ve regretted,” she replied. “I will say I didn’t think my ‘Insurrection Barbie’ tweet to a certain someone would have picked up so much momentum, but I stand by it.”

The Texan singer has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights within the country music scene since the start of her career. Previously she appeared as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and apologised for country music’s historically poor relationship with its queer fans.

Similarly, last year she announced plans to depart from country music due to the industry’s “homophobia and transphobia”.

“The further you get into the country music business, that’s when you start to see the cracks, and once you see it, you can’t un-see it. So you start doing everything you can with the little power you have to make things better,” she said.

She continued: “After the Trump years, people’s biases were on full display. It just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music.”

More recently, she addressed her wardrobe malfunction that went viral while she was on stage. The incident happened as she performed as a part of Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July picnic concert in Camden, New Jersey.
