Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect is set to receive a television adaptation, following on from the success of Fallout earlier this year.

The BioWare video game series will be basis for an upcoming Amazon MGM Studios production, as reported by Variety, with Daniel Casey being attached as a writer and executive producer.

Casey is known as a writer on the Fast & Furious film F9 and the 2018 sci-fi film Kin, and also worked on 2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane. Karim Zreik, Ari Arad and EA’s Michael Gamble are also listed as executive producers for the series.

The four Mass Effect third-person shooter games depict a distant future in which humanity is being confronted by a race of aliens known as the Reapers. The first two games, Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, were released by Microsoft Game Studios in 2007 and 2010, with Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, following on EA in 2010 and 2017.

The franchise has since spawned an anime film Mass Effect: Paragon Lost in 2012, as well as novels, comic books and multiple other media. A feature film had been planned as far back as 2010, but never materialised. The TV adaptation was first speculated upon in 2021.

Prime Video’s Fallout adaptation landed on the streamer in April and quickly became their second most-watched show with over 65million people watching the post-apocalyptic drama in the first 16 days. It went on to be nominated for a slew of Emmy Awards.

In the weeks following the premiere, a number of Fallout games received a huge boost in players, while many tracks also saw a surge in popularity after being featured in the show. Fallout 4 reached a seven-year high of concurrent players on SteamFallout 76 had its best weekend ever and New Vegas achieved a nine-year high.

In a four-star reviewNME wrote: “Unlike fellow post-apocalyptic shows The Last Of Us and The Walking DeadFallout is a dark comedy that finds laughter in ludicrously terrible situations. Director Jonathan Nolan (Westworld) shows a deft understanding of the source material throughout – peppering each episode with references to Bethesda’s beloved video game series.”

A second season of Fallout was confirmed shortly after the first season aired, and Macaulay Culkin has reportedly joined the cast.
