Matt Smith and Emma D'Arcy

Matt Smith has corrected an interviewer who misgendered Emma D’Arcy at yesterday’s (June 12) House Of The Dragon premiere.

Smith and D’Arcy star in the returning Game of Thrones prequel series where they star as aemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively.

During an interview at the House Of The Dragon season two premiere in London, Smith spoke to Sue Perkins on the red carpet about the upcoming season and the climatic moment in the season one finale where Daemon informs Rhaenyra about the death of her son, Lucerys.

Perkins, who hosts Sky fan show House of the Dragon: War Room, used “she” pronouns when referring to D’Arcy. Perkins has spoken to D’Arcy earlier on the red carpet and told Smith “she gave you all the credit” for the scene.

Smith replied: “I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” Smith answered, using D’Arcy’s preferred “they/them” pronouns. “They are absolutely brilliant and you’re in for a real treat with Emma this year, I think Emma’s put in … a really great performance.”

D’Arcy identifies as non-binary and in the past has described themselves as “a trans-masc presenting person,” as per Highsnobiety.

Smith has previously praised his co-star, recently telling Variety that shooting season two of House of the Dragon was difficult because he didn’t get as much time to film with D’Arcy as their characters are separated in several new new episodes.

Smith explained: “It was difficult to do it without them because I love them — a person of real depth and sardonic humour and fierce intellect.

The season two reviews have been strong so far, currently sitting on a 91 per cent rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

In a four-star review of the first season, NME wrote: “What is reassuring is that House Of The Dragon feels as though it is walking on solid ground: the bubbling rivalries, the jostling for power, the eruptions of violence; six episodes in, it is all coming together to create a rich stew … it is a relief to see a prequel that seems to know what it’s doing. A decent watch for fans and neutrals alike.”

House of the Dragon season two arrives on HBO and Max on June 16.
