Maya Hawke

Maya Hawke has admitted that she is “comfortable with not deserving” the life she has because of her parents’ background.

The Stranger Things actor and musician is the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman and emphasised that her relationship with them is “positive” which “supersedes anything anyone can say about it”. She has also worked with them, having starred opposite her mother in The Kill Room and was directed by her father in the drama Wildcat, both of which came out last year.

“Deserves is a complicated word,” she told The Times. “There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn’t help anyone.

“I saw two paths when I was first starting and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job and go to open casting roles.”

She added: “It’s OK to be made fun of when you’re in rarefied air. It’s a lucky place to be.

“My relationships with my parents are really honest and positive, and that supersedes anything anyone can say about it.”

Hawke released her third album, ‘Chaos Angel’, yesterday (May 31), which features the singles ‘Hang In There’,  ‘Missing Out’ and ‘Dark’. Elsewhere in the interview, she spoke about the moment she realised many of her gigs were full of Stranger Things fans.

“I was almost depressed about it,” she admitted. “Like, I’m glad there are people here, but I guess they don’t care about the music.”

Hawke’s next role is in Inside Out 2, in which she plays Anxiety. Amy Poehler will reprise her role as Riley, as will Sadness and Anger (Phyllis Smith and Lewis Black respectively). New voices include Tony Hal (Fear) and Liza Lapira (Disgust). The film is set for release on June 14.
